Volvo are actively making more petrol cars now as no one wants a 60k car that will travel 60 miles on an icy night like the one i test drove. At -4 degrees, power is limited as the batteries self destruct if loaded when cold.
I pity Jaguar who declared they have no petrol cars in their range.
Toyota hybrid without a plug in is brilliant but i wait to see next year what it value is when buying another car. It may be i buy a petrol only car as they are mostly doing about 53 mpg now by using high powered small engines.
My high powered 200 bhp 2 litre will easily do 63mpg locally once engine has heated, then it drives 60 percent on electric motor in the average A and B road use.
Motorway use brings 53mpg at 70 mph ish. I anticipate it might lose 25k of its value at 3 years. A petrol car may use more fuel but hybrid already cost 5k more to buy. Its been an experiment and the answer will come next year wether to buy a fuel only car.
EVs are not very popular here as most houses are terraced with no parking to charge. Each time i look at the local charging stations, i have only ever seen one car plugged in as i drive past.
Insurance rates are higher for EV cars as the repair costs are much higher. I have yet to see one that will get to Birmingham on a wet and dark Winter night where the range will be about 90 miles. I can drive there and back in one day without stopping for fuel on the way back. 450 mile range on the full tank but also has the battery capacity.
