Back in the 1980s when I ran a car accessory shop the EU department of stupid ideas and money grabbing they came up with the idea that only spares made by the original maker of the vehicle could be fitted to a car.
Thus, a headlamp bulb for a BMW could only be bought from BMW, even though such an item was standard across all makes. Same with tyres etc. Thus ensuring an increased VAT take, and would probably forced us peasant off the road.

Fortunately the idea was defeated.
