Indeed Caustic is a tried and tested method - but pay heed to Nigels warnings, and dont let it near any alloy components, it will eat it away.

Setting fire to carbon deposits with an Oxy Acetylene torch is another way - but you can do it with a decent gas blowlamp, very spectacular once the carbon starts burning, but say good by to the chrome. OK for baffles though.
