The headgear that they must wear helps a lot to prevent head injury.
The self-defense aspect is a good side benefit also.
I'd be more concerned if he were playing Rugby. My brother, when he came out of the paratroops, joined a Rugby club and like to got beat to death. Broken sternum, recovered, then shattered jaw and quit after 3 months of eating through a straw...
