Not true at all. Nothing to do with France.
Golden Delicious apples were a chance hybrid of a Grimes Golden and an unknown tree, first raised on the farm of JM Mullins of Clay County, West Virginia around 1900 or so.
One of the top selling apples in the US for 100 years, and the best we've ever had for any kind of cooking (applesauce, apple butter, baked apples, apple pies).
