Not quite.

If I catch someone slashing at, say, my wife or granddaughter with a razor or scalpel, I personally would beat him senseless or shoot him, regardless of what his "story" was about his intent with his weapon.

A sheriff's deputy who caught him, acting completely according to the law, would forcefully disarm him, whatever that took. If the person then calmed down and submitted to arrest, he would have his arms pinned behind him, handcuffed, marched to a police car, and shoved inside.

If he did NOT calm down and he ran, or fought the police, he would be forcefully gotten under control with a pain-compliance police hold, with a taser, or (if he attacked the police with a knife or scalpel) would be shot until he was no longer a threat.

It's always been that way. I don't see anything wrong with that. Everyone knows that's the result.
