Dave, in the circumstances you are in, i would ask the insurer to get you help clearing the area. A local furniture removal firm would do it in minutes and much safer.
When i was in electrical contracting, we never asked the home owner to remove furniture etc, we did it and placed it back when completed. Normal building industry practice to do the clearing prior to work
