You cannot be forced to have a smart meter. I get a lot of letters saying my meter is worn out etc. I chuck them in the bin. Usually, they will demand they change the gas meter as well.
I alter my direct debit based on my readings and bills. They did put it up to 245 pounds a month so i took it a lot lower. I go away all of January so only use 11 Months.
