That is a pretty fundamental design error if a broken cable means it can fall on you when you release the fixing holding the tyre in place.

Would have thought it in the interests of the van manufacturer to do a recall to fix it.

Could be liable for a big payout if someone was badly injured, unless of course there is a Safety statement in the Handbook.

I would be inclined to stick the tyre in the back of the van just in case.
