"I blame modern emission regulations making engines too lean"
The Enfield Himalayan 411 is know for this, remedy is to fit a booster plug and get shot of the "air injection" system, it just richens it up a bit. Mine no longer does it.
The Trident 660 I had was also set too lean, nearly did similar to you a couple of times.
Current Speedmaster seems just fine.
Who needs a signature anyway......
