Even the Morris Minor 1000 had the tyre in a compartment under the boot floor but inside the car.
I did have a few old vans with tyres under floor lowered using the wheel wrench on a long screw in the van floor. Mostly, we preferred to keep the wheel inside the van but some vans were really full of work gear. Very uncommon to get a puncture in the 1970s van driving era
