Not one of my best decisions to take the Bullet out for a spin last night, unlike the last 3 evenings it did not cool down at all, and within a pretty short space of time I was sweating like a pig. |
Never mind I thought sometimes you have to suffer for your “art”.
I blatted along a nice shaded wood and then out onto some back roads until hitting the main A38 which has the notorious Wraxall Hill on it – really steep and the Bullet sounds great going up over it.
I was not hanging around in the lead up to the hill and when I got to the top of the hill I thought I would stop in a little farm gateway to let the bike (and myself) cool off a bit.
Shock, horror when I put on the front brake, there was a horrible knocking and vibration as I slowed down.
Once I had stopped I took a look at the brake caliper – the top mounting bolt had removed itself leaving the caliper held on by one bolt which had also worked loose.
Luckily I had my small bag of tools / bits and pieces with me – I never go out without it on the Bullet, in there I had a small length of stainless steel lock wire, so I passed it through the hole left by the missing bolt and twisted it up nice and tight to hold the caliper in place.
I then did up the other bolt the best I could using my “Leatherman” style multi tool.
I took the back roads home relying on just the back brake – it’s amazing how your instincts make you want to apply the front brake, managed to keep my hands off though until I got home.
It was also surprisingly pleasant trundling along at no more than 30MPH along the little back roads – decided to limit myself to no more than 30 in the interests of me getting home in one piece, it was however a very sweaty affair !!
It’s odd that the caliper bolt unscrewed itself as they both have spring washers under them, this time I am also going to lock wire them in place – had both bolts came out things could have been very nasty, especially as before stopping I was cracking on at a fair old pace.
Who needs a signature anyway......
