Rebuilt battery from India anyone?

A few years back te antique trade was flooded with clocks from India and they turned up at auctions and unsuspecting people bought them as they really looked the part as you have guessed they were mixtures of bits and pieces some new some old but carefully put together the often came to me for repair as they never worked or kept time
Then I had to inform them of the problems and to save them money it was easier to replace the works with a good quality Quartz movement..
There ware also Horn type grama phones being produced the horns were made out of Dulux paint tins soldered together and beautifully painted bu the actual works were a rough copy with a weak spring that would only run for half a 78 record..

When I worked in Morocco the kids would collect discarded drinks cans and sell them to the artisans. The tinsmith artisans turned them inside out, 'aged' the tin and engraved and beat patterns onto the pieces which they used to embellish their exquisite 'antique' guns to sell to the tourists.

I'm all for a man making a living any way he can, and I do applaud him and his employees for working hard ... and I don't have any problems buying from India IF the quality is good for the thing I'm buying. For all I know, these are good batteries for the price.

BUT (and this is a big BUT with spikes and buzzers on), I don't want to hear ONE WORD from anyone here in our world who buys stuff from Asia about workplace safety, protective equipment, or environmental issues in our own country.

We can afford to be all snooty-nosed about being safe and protective and workers' rights and add cost to the product and massive bureaucracies, as long as we've got guys working under these conditions OFF OUT OF OUR SIGHT so we can buy it cheap with "a clear conscience" ....

Absolutely. I used to work for Avery-Weightronix writing software for weighbridges.

I wrote a system for the British Steel (which had just been taken over by TATA, the Indian steel producers) works at Port Talbot and they had some problems so I had to drive down to drop of a new PC for the weighbridge office. I wasn't even going any further on site than the front gate. I had to sit through 3 hours of health and safety video carp before they'd let me onto the premises. By the time I got on site, the steam was coming out of my ears. I commented to the person I was meeting 'How the hell can you expect to compete with Indian steel works when you are hamstrung by all this nonsense when their steel works will be run by 14 year old kids wearing flip flops and saris?". He shook his head sadly and just said "I know"...

It's an impossible situation.

The energy company from which I retired was doing a major solar-energy installation (parabolic mirrors heating steam and boosting a coal plant) in India.

The design, the critical materials, and the top engineers were all from the USA and France, but all the workers, the equipment, foremen, etc had to be Indian (it's the law).

Since it was our job as owner, we had to be responsible for safety and had to follow our company rules. But as soon as work started, we found that the equipment operators were bringing their kids to the site with them, and they were climbing all over the moving equipment, riding the cranes, and having a big time.

We told the workers they couldn't do that, and they "downed tools". Said that their kids had no other place to go, they couldn't leave them at home while the wife worked, and that's the way it was.

We couldn't work under those conditions, they wouldn't work unless their kids could play tag on the Caterpillars, so the project folded, we lost $10 million and they were all out of a job.

There's no fixing that. East is East and West is West and never the twain shall meet ...

Just don't expect quality for peanuts especially bike parts thier petrol tanks are not accurate the welding leaves a lot to be desired they look great with great paint jobs and I know of people who have complained and they have sent a new tank free of charge but still inferior quality
I have had experience of dealing with the Indian continent at my gun shop imported hundreds of different kinds of knives hunting to ordinary penkives all costing pence and retailing for pounds (I still have a few) I also imported flint lock muskets for the Sealed Knot society to convert to period pieces but only fifty percent passed proof which of course upped the price I could sell them...

Well the guy certainly displays a lot of skill in doing what he is doing, you can tell that by the way he makes it look easy.

At least the bateries are being saved from the scrapheap.......for a while........

Who needs a signature anyway......
