So when was the last time in England or the USA that someone brought home a LIVE turkey to kill, clean, dress, and cook for the holiday?

1894? Been a while, anyway. Does anyone even remember their mother bringing home a bird from the market that still had to be plucked and drawn before putting it in the oven? We used to kill our own chickens, but the ones from the store were always ready to cook ...

Nope, but my dad frequently explains that he and his brother and father used to trap rabbits using nets and a long bramble and put them in the pot. Apparently it was a great addition to their food supply in the 30s.

Yep, we do the same with squirrels to this day. A squirrel is about a pound of meat, and it's good fried or fricasseed or stewed. And they only cost 1 .22 bullet, which are still only about 5 cents each ....

I was just thinking of the day when the market stalls and butcher shops would have fresh geese, turkeys, and game birds hung up in the shop window, feathers and all.

My great-grandfather's day, here ....

My father in law used to go out shooting, and every Boxing day they had a pheasant shoot,so that would be New Years day sorted. Then 2nd January they had a deer shoot. So never saw a Turkey getting prepped but plenty of pheasant

When I was a young boy, there was a poulterer in Shere (look it up) who kept his ducks on the stream (the Tillingbourne) that ran (and still runs...) behind the shop. We loved being taken down there by my grandmother to feed the ducks bread from the bridge over the stream. I never really associated the ducks hanging in the shop with those on the stream behind.

I used to drink with a gamekeeper so had a ready supply of pheasants and rabbits for years. Sadly he passed away, but I still love a roast pheasant or a rabbit for the pot. Some country towns still have a traditional butchers which will have game hung up outside.

You don't have to be crazy to post here, but it helps....

Yep - I have recollections of Dad bringing a fresh unplucked / ungutted chicken home to Mum to prepare.

I can remember Mum plucking the chicken in the "conservatory" and the stench when she gutted and "drew" the innards out.

That would have been mid to late 60's.

Personally I could not do it.

Before my time I knew that Mum and Dad kept chickens specifically to eat as well as for the eggs.

Who needs a signature anyway......

Usually there are lots of poultry auctions around here in the week before Christmas, but not this year due to the covid. With animal welfare & food hygiene rules livestock ceased years ago but some are still "intact" requiring gutting, plucking & dressing. There's usually a few "specialists" on site to do it for buyers. But as Lannis says the majority are oven ready. Under normal circumstances these auctions are big local social events and an integral part of Christmas for some families. There's also holly & mistletoe auctions that attract big trade buyers from That Lunnun & other far away places.

When I was around 5 years old my grandad bought a live goose home to fatten up and then kill it for Christmas. Come two days before the execution he couldn't do and we ended up with a pet goose. Happy days.

I watched my father chop off a chicken`s head, and saw it running around headless, put me off eating chicken for years .

Here in my neck of the woods, we have beans, and we have toast, but nobody ever does anything called "beans on toast". Years of Brit TV have taught me that this is the epitome of something cheap to eat when you haven't got anything else, but we don't do it.

Last time I was at the Ace Cafe (2018, I guess), and had lunch there, the cheapest thing on the menu was "egg and chips". That's another thing you'll never find in a US diner - "french fries" with a fried egg on top.

On the other hand, riding through New York once, I stopped at an old-fashioned diner, and got a "Jersey Omelet" - an omelet made with "American Cheese" (which is really "pasteurized cheese food product", not real cheese) with Grape Jelly. Actually wasn't bad, but I'll bet they don't serve it alongside a "Full English" 'over there' ... !

During and after the war Mum bred Rabbits as most people did then twenty hutches in the back garden
A rabbit held by the back legs and a whack across the back of the neck then hung on the coat hook in the kitchen skinned and de-boned then cooked
After the war mum would do half dozen and hang them on a belt under her coat and go to my uncles pub in Highgate and they would be bought over the bar this was a regular income one of the best customers was Pierpoint the hangman who lived in the area and frequented the pub
During the war a bomb exploded in the next street and damaged our house mum wasn't allowed into the back garden to see to the rabbits as the ARP man wouldn't allow as there was a UXB in the garden
Mum being mum said I want to see whare (as the garden was big) When shown the hole at the bottom of the plot Mum says you silly bugger that's whare I Bury my Rabbit bones.... It was 1950 before the war damage to our house was completed... And still can't eat Rabbit....

Rabbits are the ultimate self-regenerating source of protein. A pair of breeding rabbits will generate more meat than even a large family will eat.

That being said, we never raised them when I were a lad. We shot wild ones, but that was seldom.

We kept chickens and pigs. About 3 pigs (bought just-weaned in the spring, fed all year, and killed in early winter and salted down) would feed our family of 5 all the pork we wanted. Fifteen chickens laid all the eggs we could eat.

If times changed and we had to do it again, both I and my kids are ready, willing, and able. That's more than most of the world can say!
