Many served in WW2 but my guess is Jimmy Stewart. Several big name athletes gave prime years of their careers, also.

I won't watch John Wayne movies because of his actions during that time.

My son's a Marine so knows the story - Marvin was a ground-pounder Marine, wounded twice in action, made Corporal but busted to PFC before discharge for trouble-making .....

Right Lannis. A bit of a hellraiser. He was shot and wounded and then a sniper shot him in the foot right after. I suppose the sniper was wounding so that others might come to help and become targets.

Also read up on "Charles Durning", who is in some of my favorite movies.

He had a hell of a war as an infantryman from D-Day to VE Day, several decorations, several bad wounds ...

Not sure where we found men like that. They sure seem few and far between these days ....

That's one thing that makes Stewart interesting to watch when he's acting in movies like "Strategic Air Command" (flying a B-36) or "Flight of the Phoenix" (flying a C-119). He really knows what he's doing, since he was qualified to fly those very aircraft.

Clark Gable was to old at 40 to join up so he came to England and became a camera operator flying on bombing missions in B17s.

Don't forget Louie Zamporini.
Louis Silvie Zamperini was an American World War II veteran, an evangelical Christian and an Olympic distance runner. He took up running in high school and qualified for the US in the 5,000 m race for the 1938 Berlin Olympics, finishing 8th, but not without setting a new lap record. --- Wikipedia

That's not even half of it. Dirt poor Italian immigrant family, of small stature and bullied for it until a uncle showed him how to punch and a cousin how to run - fast. Badly burned somehow. They were told he wouldn't walk again. Thats what they thought. He got to the 38 Munich Olympics and was congratulated by Hitler himself up on the stand. All set for Gold in the next Olympics but war got in the way. Joined the USAF. Ditched returning from bombing a Jap airfield and spent a record making 47 days adrift with no sustenance and with sharks rubbing their fins along the bottom of their disintegrating dinghy. Eventually they heard a plane and fired off all their flares and water dye. Wunderbar it saw them and came back diving down low
to machine gun them - twice. It was a Jap plane !!!

James Stewart was based in Norfolk during WW 11. Norfolk had 37 Airfields at this time.

Tibenham and Buckenham still have a lot of the infrastructure left, (I have flown out of both) Hethel now home to Lotus Cars, use the refurbished hangers as part of the factory, and parts of the main runway and perimeter track, as their test track. It's only about a mile an a half away as the crow fly, and is quite audible when they are having a bit of fun.

I got the below off the internet

James Stewart, the film actor, was 703rd Squadron Commander with the 445th when it arrived at Tibenham. He flew 10 operational missions with the 445th Bomb Group before being transferred to the 453rd Bomb Group at RAF Old Buckenham in March, 1944[8]

James "Jimmy" Stewart, the Hollywood movie star, was Group Operations Officer at Old Buckenham during the spring of 1944. Stewart's fellow actor Walter Matthau was also based at Old Buckenham.

Film actor James Stewart was among those who served at Hethel. He moved there in 1944 and was promoted colonel and chief of staff of the Second Combat Wing.

Gable's main mission was as a camera operator, but he was also a qualified air gunner and took a waist gun position on several missions.

There was no way to "fake" an easy, safe life in that world!

Although I must say that I have the same respect for everyone who joined up. They took an oath to follow orders and die for their country if they had to. Some folks were ordered to the front, some worked behind the lines in support positions, some worked at home supporting the ones overseas. Everyone can't be at the front getting shot at.

My father was a machine gun instructor spent a lot of time helping to pick up body parts after the bombing in towns.

My Father was a London fireman all during the war,in the East End based I think in Shoreditch, & as you mention Ian had to do lots of quite gruesome clearing up etc. not to mention firefighting during raids, exploding gas mains, unexploded bombs etc, only thing that seemed to have affected him that he once talked sadley about was to be told to go through a bombed cinema with a sack & told to collect up only body parts that were recognizable other wise leave them where they were. he also was very moved by the people of Coventry as he was sent up to assist in clearing up after the pounding they recieved.

Yes, a very physical and mentally tough job that I for one did not appreciate till I read an account of two East End firemen in a narrow street holding a high pressure hose near vertically for hours on end in mid winter with the water cascading back down over them and all the time waiting and watching for the building to collapse --- on them, night after night.
No thanks. Puts our present trials into perspective.

I had heard about this amazing feat of bomb disposal but never knew the whole story. Incredible.
