Why, oh why do Central heating boiler's always go phut on the coldest day of the year?

And why, oh why are modern boiler's so damned unreliable?

Grrrrrr, or rather, brrrrrrr.

Mines brand new but the new timer is not like the old one whereby you pressed a button and that overided the timer so the heating is on all day and you just turn the thermostat down with the new one you press a button and get an hours boost.. That's it and I'm sure the new boiler is not as good as the old one as the old one was more controllable...

One solution is to live in a country where heating a house in winter is unnecessary.

Or live in a country where "boilers" are unheard of, and everyone uses heat pumps or forced-air gas heat ... ?

Good point Geoff, or, if it's a modern boiler, the condense pipe might have frozen up.

What's next? Oil the shaft bearings? Check the sight glass?

Was that really necessary Lannis. We're only trying to point out simple things for the layman to try before the expense of an engineer's visit. Be best if you buttoned it for a bit.

Well, I've noticed that one of the few things that's talked about on the list more than people's health (which I have no problem with; I too may have an issue for discussion someday, and it might be VERY disgusting!) is the state of the boilers in people's houses, and how they're not as good today as the old ones, and how expensive they are to fix, and how they can be taken care of.

It seems to be a subject of great interest, and it's of even greater interest to me, since I've never even seen one, and can no more imagine checking blow-off valves, sight glasses, and pressure gauges in order to heat my house (not drive a Castle Class 4073 4-6-0 locomotive, heat my house) than I would fly to the moon, so NATURALLY I'm interested, and so I make droll comments (that's two today, I'm on a roll!) so as to elicit, maybe, a better understanding of why it all is like it is.

And incidentally, you can see the result when someone on an open, public discussion list, discussing something completely on topic with not even any thread drift, is told to "Button It".

It seems to have exactly the opposite effect. So maybe, if the goal is to have the subject die out, and ONLY comments made in direct support of the way you'd like to see it go, we might try NOT saying "Button It" and see if that has the intended effect.

I'm willing. My proposal would be (and this is what I do)

"If you see the name of a poster in whom you are not interested, simply don't click on that post. No frustration, no wasted time, easy peasy".

Is that a problem for some reason that I don't understand?

Yes once the pressure starts to drop the bl!!dy things won't start. Only needs a small weep in the system for the pressure to drop. It usually brings up a code on the front of the boiler.

Water pressure is nearly always the problem so put about 1.2 bar on the gauge. Listen for the flue fan as that starts next. no fan and that means no start.
Of course, there are many other bells and whistles on these boilers. I only trained on one make at the Uni and spent 5 days on a course. Then i was told not to repair one as i would need to have a gas certificate to enter the combustion chamber. Useful though to repair all the outer parts. Then i phoned the repairer with a guide to what it might be.

It's coming up with an ignition lock out code. I've tried all the obvious things set out in the manual. I don't mind playing with the water side of central heating systems, but don't have the knowledge to delve into the gas side. Engineer booked for tomorrow, or rather re-booked as he was coming out to do the annual service next week anyway

Condensate trap probably silted up. Mine does every year. If you can clean it out you'll be fine

Mine is a modern (obviously) boiler it was just fitted into my original system and that nt pressurised only one control on the boiler to adjust the heat output and a pump to drain the condensed water installed buy Brit Gas and alway been on their call-out scheme usually with you in a day..

Yep, got it in one. Cleared out the sump drainage and all is good. Its nice to be warm again...

I would first find my toffee hammer, then when there's a click from the gas solenoid give the area
round the pilot assembly a few light taps. You will probably see a pinkish bit of colour as dust burns off and clears the jet. Repeat every five years.
If they want to know who told you, say a bloke down the pub.
Of course it maybe much like the sparkling plug in the bike and the ignition probe just needs a tweek to close the gap a bit.
All common sense really. Trump would let you do it.

do you get it serviced at all CF? my ancient boiler (1960's possibly),has been on it's last legs for years,according to my boiler man,but he services it every year,and it's still operating.. touch wood!
