Old tractor, anyone .... ?

I'd never heard of one of these; the guys in the video are doing a lot of BSing as they get ready to start it, but they claim it's English, and I've never seen such a starting technique. It's worse than a steam engine!

These ever show up at ag equipment shows?

A 5lit. single cylinder two stroke. I know a bloke locally whose got one and seen it start and run. Don't forget to take the shot out of the cartridge.

Yes I have a friend who has three Field Marshals you can start them with a cigarette as well lovely machines

Yes they do start with a wick that resembles a cigarette. Once running, the front wheels hop off the ground a little at tickover. brilliant to watch.

To start an m4a1 Sherman with a radial engine after its been standing for a while one has to turn it over 40 turns of the handle by hand to stop you blowing the bottom cylinders off due to the oil running down into them causing a hydro lock.

I'm aware of that, but it obviously seeped down there so why can't it seep back. I'm not that familiar with radials so just wondered.

The engines a 9 cylinder air cooled lump with no sump so when stationary the oil drains down into the bottom cylinders each cylinder has 2 plugs with 2 magnetos, when stating you start with one mag then switch on to both, lots of smoke and sometimes flames from the exhaust on start up, on one occasion when I started it a friend who was standing by with a fire extinguisher ran away, I asked what the trouble was, his reply - primitive man took over

Mmm, now that's a piece of information that could come in very handy. Must jot that one down.

Why 40 turns? Sounds like too much work.

On MY Sherman, I use 20w synthetic and I only have to go 20 turns ....

Just read the book - Death Traps. Written by an American officer who got over for D-Day. He was responsible for keeping them going. Never had enough spark plugs. They would foul up on tickover waiting to advance. Terrible job, what with recovery under fire, cleaning up the interiors (delegated) ready for painting, repair and reissue.
Survived it all though, unlike the majority of his staff college pals. I now appreciate just what the Americans did for us
let alone the Romans.

The biggest trouble with early Shermans was the cast gun turret a big weakness

Another was the narrow tracks. They even resorted to welding angle iron to them to spread the load on boggy ground.
The author of the book put a lot of the blame on Patton who still saw tanks as cavalry. Light weights to just dash in and out which was fine till they came up against the armour plate of Jerry.

I watched both George C Scott's Patton films recently and what a bit of acting. The first one must rate among the finest WW2 films.

There are a lot of myths and rubbish written and talked about the Sherman tank, and who cares? but if you happen to be interested in the facts refer to the Hunnicutt book.
In my opinion the best WW2 tank (taking everything into account) was the Russian T34, but again who cares? And don’t bother taking notes Al.
