When did it all change?

I can well remember when a Vincent Comet was unsellable at £60 in the 50s - when we closed our bike shops in the 70s we cut the remaining stock up to get more in the skips, what happened apart from inflation, and what bikes will continue to be wanted?

Why did they go up in price? Supply and demand.

Yes the obvious response very good haha - but what caused the change, just peoples perversion in wanting anything that was perceived to be in short supply, or something more understandable.

My Venom Clubman was broken up for spares as it wasn't worth hardy anything at that time the logbook had first owner Eric Oliver Word sidecar champion and Pat Wise racer worth something now

The first name in my Goldie's buff log book is Bob Keeler of Wembley, not a world champion, but he did ride works Norton's on the island. As to whether he actually rode my Goldie is another matter.

Yes he was also the last rider on a Norton to win the Clubmans in 1953 and then a works Norton rider until he fell out with Joe Craig over not being supplied with a bike to practice on in the IOM.

It's not a "perversion", it's actually how supply and demand WORKS.

There ARE a few rare things which aren't desirable ... but you combine the rarity of old motorcycles (because we beat them up and trashed them in the day), combined with the thread below on this very list about "Your Favorite Motorcycle", where we all want to return to the Good Olde Days ...

... and up goes the price.

Who knew that the $900 Hemi option on a $3200 car in 1970 would add $500,000 to the value of the car in 2020? As history shows, it's impossible to predict "which ones".

We bought 2 vintage Bentleys a 3 litre Brooklands record holder and 41/2 little blown in about 1975 for £20.000 about the price of a 4 bedroom detached house, about a year later sold the 3 litre for about £10,000 to a Swedish collector and got a £1.5 million offer for the blown Bentley in 1997 when interest rates on deposits were 10% - offer not accepted.
Now we have some Broughs going for about £200,000, good luck. I wouldn’t be a buyer.

I don't know ... if we ALL had crystal balls, then ALL of us would be picking the "right stuff", and it would just be ordinary again.

Now, if one or two of us had crystal balls and the rest of this lot didn't ...

Combination of things perhaps.

Rose tinted spectacles, old codgers wanting to re live their youth, stuff becomming rare because we chopped them up and chucked into a skip, or simply wore them out and chucked them away.

Dont doubt there are lot of factors at work here, and different folk have differing reasons for wanting a particular bike.

Take my H2 - they seem to be "sought after" / "collectors" pieces, but why? At the end of the day it is just a basic piston ported 2 stroke, that neither handles or stops particularly well, and only has mediocre performance compared to a modern bike, and has pretty poor fuel economy.

Jeez - now I am wondering why I like it

Who needs a signature anyway......

Maybe there's demand for Comet 'coz people want a Vincent but can't afford a twin? Or want a lighter Vincent? Or they're more readily available now the twins have all been bought up?
