Small batch spares manufacturing suppliers

I'm nearly losing the will to live whilst spending many hours on t'Web in search of <u>manufacturers</u> to supply various parts. I've also unsuccessfully searched the well known usual suspects and dozens of ad hoc distributors' ranges and emailed several. All require larger volumes (200+) for their CNC equipment.
At present there are these parts but there are many other more technical parts, e.g. timing side and drive side axles for singles etc.

25 pcs of each required in EN24T, BCY 26TPI, unplated or BZP. NOT s/steel.
(Yes, I know this first one is a set screw, not a bolt but I'm using someone else's photos).

The usual small batch suppliers used in the past have either now retired and the business closed or are semi-retired guys working (more or less from a home workshop) and only when they feel like it, or very small one/two man bands who are very rapidly becoming extinct.
Surely this must also be a problem for other classic bike clubs and owners which will surely become more problematic over time?

You would hope that the market will correct itself over time ... if there's a need, and people willing to pay, then there are normally people with the skills, willingness, and desire to make money on their own who will fill the need.

There are SO many interesting and in-demand products to be made, and there are a lot of people in that business, that I regret sometimes that I never had that "entrepreneurial" spirit that would take advantage of that. I was lucky that I worked for some very good corporations and enjoyed my career (and pension), but there would have been a different type of satisfaction from being my own boss and dealing with fellow enthusiasts in some field.

Anyhow, I do hope the economics of it works out, and smart guys use their skills and knowledge to fill a need a made a living, even if it's low-volume hobbyist hardware ... ! I can tell you that right now, if you want some motorcycle cylinder head work done, or cranks rebuilt, or special parts needed, you'd better possess your soul in patience, because the guys that do it are booked solid a year in advance ....

Me too, Lannis. I've set up two manufacturing businesses of my own and much of my career was as Buyer or Prod'n Manager in several engineering companies.
20 years ago I would have enjoyed the challenge and satisfaction of setting up a 'lifestyle' manufacturing operation for small batch or one-off parts. I've considered setting up such a business, taking on a lad, probably aided by funding from Gov't apprenticeship grants but at 75 I don't have sufficient enthusiasm or need the money, (not that it would ever produce a fortune).

When I retired I wanted to set up an informal bike maintenance course for youngsters purely as a philanthropic exercise. A wealthy pal offered me the use of a workshop unit free of charge, I solicited the donations of free tools, protective equipment, soldering irons, multimeters and much other stuff from local sponsors and was all set to go.
The Council heard about my plans and required me to get CRB/DBS clearance, a First Aider on site, Fire certificate, M&F toilet and washing facilities, public liability insurance, change of use approved as an educational establishment and a whole load of other bureaucratic hoops. Needless to say I abandoned the idea.

Yeah, that over-regulation thing is a booger.

It's like that in a lot of cities here, where the Stasi informants are everywhere and there are armies of jobsworths with nothing to do except make life hard on people. Typically, though, here around where I live, we have a lot of people that just go ahead with what they want to do, and it works out fine, no one gets hurt, and some good gets done despite government desires to the contrary ...

You sort of have to know "who's who", though, when you need something off the grid. In a small community, it's not so hard.

Old bike parts, though, you need to go farther afield!!

The items are the kind of thing I was doing on a weekly basis but since the stroke last year I am only doing stuff for myself and some friends. I never did more than cover costs certainly not a wage earner but kept me busy and justified keeping the Lathe and Milling Machine.

Sadly that's a far too familiar scenario, Divie.
I've two brilliant and highly skilled retired engineer pals. Both lifelong Brit bike enthusiasts - one a pattern maker (at one time for Vincent cylinder head castings), the other a plastic injection mould and tool maker who did, among other things, specialist BSA crankshaft work. Both when retired brought home their lathes, milling machines etc. and continued to produce small batch stuff more or less for pocket money and to keep themselves and their brains active.
Both now only do the occasional one-off 'interesting' stuff for biking friends whenever they feel well enough from age-related infirmity; arthritis etc. but we still swap 'blokey' bike anecdotes over a brew in their sheds though (when permitted).

Jerry. Feked have very few Cycle thread bolts and list mostly complete sets, e.g. Triumph Cyl Head set without any indication or dims or what the set comprises. I've emailed them.

Alan & Steve. I've looked on their websites and emailed them. I didn't previously look at Acme as I was under the impression that they only had s/steel.

All suggestions much appreciated.
I've emailed all the above as having spent most of the day on the blower not only am I losing my voice but my ear's like a braised lamb chop.

Just a question, why EN27T ? Seems an unusually high specification. Just how much these stress are they going to be under?

EN24T, not 27 John. TBH I can't tell you why except that it's the original factory spec'n for them.
In truth none of the manufacturers' websites actually specify the material of their BSC thread fastenings so it hasn't inhibited my searching.

Yes EN24T typo on my part. When I made the fork spindles for my BSA b21 I also used exactly the method described by Hants Ian. Turning from Hex. bar is very wasteful of material.

Even the bolts that I made for some girder forks were only EN16T. Why don't you do the same as the girder fork bolts. Thread each end of some bar screw a nut on one end and braze or weld it in place. Finish off in a lathe.

Thread each end of some bar screw a nut on one end and braze or weld it in place. Finish off in a lathe.

Thanks Ian. It could be done that way as a one-off temporary solution but even so there isn't anyone able and willing to do that, plus there are many different parts needed and we will need stock replacement on a regular ongoing commercial basis.

Have emailed them with details and photos because phoning around a couple of dozen potential suppliers over the past two days and explaining the details time and again has become very time consuming and tedious!

If you want those bolts to be exactly correct then remember that a major problem for many steel suppliers will be the hexagon sizes. Cycle threads use the same hex sizes as BSW/BSF bolts and these are specific to the bolts and not standard AF sizes.

I tend to make these in stainless because, strangely, the hexagon sizes are available if you know where to look. I keep a small stock, and use a supplier if I need larger quantities.

Other opinions may be available but this one is always correct.

Thanks Mike. I'm just volunteering to help a pal and our club's spares scheme searching for a number of items for which 'we' are having difficulty in finding a supplier.
In light of the replies (another one below) from the people I've contacted it seems as though stainless will have to be considered.

Tigerville... I've had the reply (below) today from your suggestion to contact Mike Peters at Polished Stainless. (He mentions Namrick whom I have already contacted and drawn a blank):

hi , sorry but we are slowly stopping selling non stainless fastenings, we only have stainless in cycle and bsf now, mainly because of the same difficulties as you are finding now, the cost for these was nearly the same price as the stainless and we are asked for mainly stainless.
the only other people I would recommend is Namrick , although I don't think they supply cycle , only bsf.

Yes, Sparrow, that's why I've focused upon manufacturers rather than distributors but obviously manufacturers need large volumes for the parts to be re-sellable by our retail spares scheme. As you may realise, a large section of the old bike fraternity don't understand why 'a simple bolt' can cost them four or five quid.

Sorry we only do stainless. We do not know anybody who makes normal steel bolts due to the plating problems nowadays.

If we made them we would have to retool, keep the swarf separate and minimum order would have to be in the several hundred

due to the amount of inserts (come in boxes of 10 at £15 each) (would need 5 boxes) plus 8 to 12 hours setup and tooling times required to retool a cnc and reprogram.

You need to find somebody who does it as a hobby on manual machines.

Do you really need BSC? I only ask as UNF are available (see Ebay 262150815996). technically incorrect I know, but would anyone notice when it was in position? Would get you out of a fix if you can't find anything else.

UNF is an option John, although the g/box/primary chain adjuster set screw mates with a BSC tapped crosshead which spans the left and right hand engine and g/box mounting plates.
In the eBay link you gave I didn't find UNF set screws (g/box adjuster) and they don't list a 5/16" dia bolt (g/box top bolt) for the other one.
I realise that the eBay link you gave is just an example so a further search for UNF equivalents may be more fruitful than persisting with BSC.
(I appreciate all the suggestions although no doubt like others I'm finding this tedious searching about as exciting as having root canal treatment).

Steve/Sprid,
bolts are a pain in the backside to make on a manual centre late, usually due to the length of overhang causing chatter while turning down to size for threading. Unless you have a capstan lathe or have some kind of turning box that supports the work while the OD of the bolt is being turned down the job takes a long time.
With a CNC machine they can be made at a reasonable speed, however it takes a lot of messing about just to set up the tooling. I have a lathe attachment for my CNC mill and can set it up for gang tooling but the last time I used it it took me the best part of a day to set up and then it took two or three attempts with a bit of tweaking in between to produce a good quality part, so I can understand d the reluctance on the part of machine shops to make them.

I had a very nice set of studs made about 18 months ago, about 10, all different and made to my drawings. The chap advertises on eBay, for example as here:

SteveB - Point taken. The situation is requiring a bit more thought and we'll have to review our future pricing since with (I think) a 30% mark up we're currently selling one at £6.33 and the other (022595) at £1.50 which isn't going to get anyone very rich.
Inevitably there's a lot of capital invested in stock of essential but slow moving parts which are always increasingly expensive each time we are obliged to buy replacements in small quantities and as many will know, some owners can be tight-wads when it comes to spending on 'consumable' stuff to keep their treasured bikes running.

You can say that again, Sparrow.
There's one paid guy in the stores, packing and despatching but all the research, technical investigations, producing drawings, spec's and purchasing admin is run by just a couple of volunteers who devote many hours to it every week on the phone, emailing and on the web.
I previously ran a 'spare time' business and it brassed me off when customers moaned about paying £2.50 P&P for a £2.50 item (perhaps showing me less than a quid profit) which was unique to my range and that I'd had specially made. I felt like asking whether they really felt that a fiver was too much to get the bike back on the leafy lanes again. Sigh.

Spriddler, I have asked a friend who gets small batches done locally for the contact details. I used to do all his odd jobs but one at a time on a centre lathe is working out expensive even at £5 an hour plus materiel, I doubt if I covered running and consumable costs.
A few years ago I rebushed and spindled a set of girder forks for someone. His coment when I asked for £85 was "That's a lot of money to drill a hole and put a bush in" Yes tightwads abound....

I used to do all his odd jobs ......even at £5 an hour plus materiel, I doubt if I covered running and consumable costs.

My 'unskilled' window cleaner must make £20 an hour with just a ladder, bucket and mop.
