NHS protest O/T.

A 61 year old woman who works for the NHS organised a protest against the 1% pay rise. OK 40 people attended and broke the lockdown rules. The organiser was fined £10,000 pounds.
Disgusting IMO and getting closer to a police state every day.

I heard the NHS nurses union were putting £30 million int the organising a strike so somebody is making money..

During the coming recession, i doubt many workers will get 1 percent. Daily cost of living will possibly be less for the next year at least. Last time we were in a crisis in 2010, i had no pay rise for 3 years. In the last year, i had a pay cut of 20p per hour. I was glad i had a job at that time.

I understand your outrage Hampy but it is the responsibility of the police to enforce the laws of the land whether you or I (or the police) agree with the laws or not.
The regrettable part is that in spite of these huge fines (if they ever get paid) they don't seem to be having much effect.

In Australia, the fortnightly base rate for the aged pension will rise by $7.70 for a single person to $868.30 with a supplement by $0.70 a fortnight to $84.40.
For couples, the pension will increase by $11.60 a fortnight to $1309 with the supplement by $1 a fortnight to $127.20.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all in favour of these penalties for people who break the rules for pleasure, financial gain or just plain stupidity. In this case I get the impression that she was penalised for going against a government decision.
Remember a lot of these NHS staff have put their lives on the line fighting the pandemic and some have even died.

The number of people walking around Exmouth seafront close together looks like a big meeting. The area is swamped with visitors. All parking spaces are full and the camper vans are back. Local Council is now opening another motor home park but prices going up from 11 pounds a night to 18 pounds. Local council are exploiting the situation and encouraging the tourists now. Our local police just keep driving up and down. They are very tame police around here. No one gets stopped as long as they are at the takeaways generating money for the shops. I might get a photo next sunny day which will illustrate the large number of walkers out.

I agree it is a sad state of affairs, no doubt that NHS workers have literally put their lives on the line.

1% is an insult, but having said that there are I am sure many others who will not be receiving a pay rise this year, me included as CV19 has pretty much screwed the company finances.

Having said this, the NHS should be a special case, and if not prepared to give them a raise then the Govt should have looked at a 1 off payment or something similar.

As I think Geoff says further down re the 10k fine - people know the rules and if they are not enforced they are not really a deterrent, the cops are only enforcing the law.

Just my 2 penneth.

No, it isn't.

The pay freeze for most other public sector workers for the next few years - on top of miserable increments for the previous few years - is an insult.

NHS workers have had far more generous settlements over the past couple of years than others & are being offered an increase when others are not. Hardly an insult.

Public finances have also taken a massive hit, they are not a bottomless pit. The NHS already absorbes a very large amount of public money and, if what I have read is correct, the 1% offer will cost £500 million a year extra.

£500 million isn't a great deal in the overall scheme of things. Last year we gave away thirty times that amount in overseas aid. Ask yourself who you would rather get this allegedly spare money.

Perhaps any rise at all should be targeted at just front line staff - a lot of none front line NHS staff have had it easy over the past 12 months with little to do, and don’t forget the very good pension they all get, far more than the private sector get these days.

Over the past year I have to thank the NHS they sorted Maz in the first lockdown last year with her Cancer the treatment was harsh as they were constricted by timeliness She had five weeks of radiotherapy in one week which was harsh but thankfully to them she is clear and still getting attention.. Then me just before Christmas with the heart attack and a second three weeks back nothing bt praise But it's the way the NHS is run now with branches doing the same job and the hospital.. Like the referral service.. This was originally done by your doctor now a seperate department.. And dont get me going on parking where only a proportion goes to the NHS.
As with Firemen and Police they have had there pay frozen for three years..

Public sector pensions are the best you will get. That is a good reason to work, and stay working in the NHS or local government. Frequently, during my work in local Government, some years there was no pay rise. In the 1980s, pay rises were generous. i doubt many NHS employees would strike as they are generally a contented lot.
Holidays are about 35 days a year plus Bank Holdays and full pay for 6 months if sick. A lot of fringe benefits. I had full pay for 5 months after my knee replacement. This type of employment is a very safe bet for future problems you might get.
I know a few NHS staff and they all love the job at the hospitals. They are all long term staff who will stay until retirement. For most, the pay is adequate and even if more money is available outside, they would never have all the benefits of NHS employment.
I like the NHS and they deserve good pay in a normal World. Its a bit difficult right now.
As Hampy says, i would rather money was given to NHS staff than overseas charities.
My own charity donations are only to UK based groups. Human charities and not animals.

I support charities that only have income from donations the Devon Air Ambulance for one and Lifeboat plus the Force Cancer Charity that have helped me and Maz.. My granddaughter was lifted from the middle of Dartmoor by the DAA so they are close to my heart....

Force is an excellent charity Dave, My late brother paid for some of the kitchen they have at the RD and E centre in the car park. On his death, we gave them 400 pounds. Little shop in Heavitree as well. Most of my charity gifts are through ebay which allows you to donate a percentage of any sale. The Age Concern shop in St Thomas was also good and they used to take my Late Mother out to meet other elderly people. One of my boys works in the air ambulance shop as a volunteer.

You know, the "cops only enforcing the law" comment is interesting when contrasted with the fact that every time someone's stuff is stolen, it's made clear (on IKBA, every time) that the police are not interested, will not even investigate, and it's up to each of us to upgrade our own security to make it more difficult for the scrotes because the police will not enforce the law.

What's different here, you reckon?

Exactly Jerry. They go for the low hanging fruit, usually to achieve funding critical targets or crimes that are the political flavours of the month.

Out of the first 250 reported crimes of maybe 1000 that I looked at for my area (about 75% were public disorder) all but about about 20 said:
'Closed. Investigation completed. No suspect identified'.

Have a look at your own county data showing individual crimes reported, type, action taken and outcomes in this link:

then choose the left hand 'button' labelled 'Downloads'. Select your county and tick 'Include crime data' and 'Include outcomes data' at the bottom of the page.

You'll be horrified at the number of reported crimes not investigated or closed due to lack of evidence or a suspect.
As you said Jerry; it's much easier and less time-consuming and with no investigations and little paperwork to get a result by turning up at a demonstration and bundling 20 people into a meat wagon..i.e. Crime reported...tick, followed up...tick, arrests made...tick, fines imposed....tick. All boxes ticked. End of.
