starting a new thread as my original may be lost too far down the page,or of no interest? at that time we were talking about mot's led's & noisy exhaust's and it reminded me that some time ago there was talk of Noise camera's under test some where or other has anybody got any new info ? or comment about them my own view it's a very complex & controversial subject, with varying reflections from surface ,buildings, atmosphere, ambient levels ,et-al has any progress been made or hopefully not?!!
Very difficult to get a device to be accurate enough (particularly over a very short period) to provide proof for a conviction or prosecution. There are byelaws that limit noise levels; but over a reasonable period. London is particularly strict about not increasing noise levels beyond a set amount above normal background noise. I've had several background noise level surveys carried out in London prior to the installation of commercial cooling equipment. Often this would just limit the operating periods and sometimes attenuation was required. A very complex subject.
UK noise camera was trialled near one of the popular bike cafes in SE England (Loomies?) but I haven't heard what happened = no results published that or news on extended trials or legislation.
Some German & Austrian districts have already introduced noise limits on certain roads on certain days of the week = to stop "enthusiastic" riding on twisty roads in scenic countryside. I don't know if its true but apparently the noise level prohibits the district's own police bikes!
The noise limited Tirol road has a 95dB "standing noise" limit - less than is allowed under current the Euro homologation limts. The Ducati Multistradas used by the local police exceed the 95dB limit as Will noted. IIRC the limit applies between the 1st March & 31st October i.e the normal summer riding season. Again IIRC, the fine is in the order of €400 if you get caught & they are noise testing at the side of the road to check compliance. Motorrad magazine had a list of compliant bikes last year & there may be other roads being affected. Sad state of affairs when you are not allowed to use a road on an unmodified, homologated, otherwise fully legal bike - but the limit was at the request of locals fed up with a constant barrage of noise from modified bikes, usually not local & who don't often stop and benefit the local economy (hotels, cafes etc.).
I seem to recall reading that France does have functional noise cameras.
There are a lot of restrictions being applied "over there" concerning bikes alone or more draconianly towards bikes - several stretches of road in Germany now have motorycle bans (some part time, some seasonal, some total) & a large area of Northern Italy in the Dolmites has substantially reduced speed limits for all traffic, but lower limits still for motorcycles only - down to 50 kph for bikes in places, where other traffic can do 70.
Loud pipes don't save lives - but they do annoy the hell out of local residents of popular routes. Noise cammeras, noise limits on roads, roadside noise checks are just remedies applied to try to reduce a perceived problem that a minority perpetuate.
Well done Will you have reminded me I now remember "Loomies"was mentioned ,as I live in Farnbouough I have been there usually take a run out on a Thursday weather permitting, more often though we ride down to the Station Cafe in Alton will try to make enquiries after lockdown is eased.
About cameras that take pictures, a little bit off the topic but, in this age of modern technology, when someone is being interviewed on TV, the noise of the press cameras is often deafening with a barrage of CLICKING focal- plane shutter cameras nearly drowning out the speaker. There must be a camera out there which is a bit quieter?Leon Novello
