Re: Road surfaces

The road surfaces everywhere I have ridden this year have been pretty dire - big chunks missing, sunken manholes, large grooves along the white line area where the two "strips" of tarmac join has eroded, bodged repairs on top of earlier bodged repairs, gravel everywhere (particularly on bends) - it is pretty depressing. |
No noticable different between West Yorks, North Yorks, North Lincs, North Derbyshire, Dumfries & Galloway, Scottish Borders - all pretty grim. There are the odd stretches that have been redone, but they are few and far between & don't seem to last long.
Odd that the highways authorities can not "find" the money to adequately maintain the roads in half-way decent condition, but there appears to be a bottomless pit for proliferating pointless 20 limits, "traffic calming" measures, painting big red stripes across the road with the (usually reduced from last time I used the road) speed limit or "SLOW" etc, etc.
Went out on the latest aquisition today (more about that in a later post) & came back early - due in large part to high traffic levels, abysmal driving standards & the pointlessly low speed limits applied in many areas - just not fun, really.
Disappointing to learn that Somerset is no better that around here - looks like my "alternative" summer break will be employed now as P&O ferries have just pointed out that I can't go to Europe - again ! And the "alternative" that was booked earlier "just in case" is Somerset, Devon, Cornwall & Dorset ....
