When our craft guys (electricians, carpenters, plumbers, etc) were working on a construction project 3 months at a time 500 miles from home, they got a "Per Diem" allowance for hotel and food, usually around $150 per day. The assumption was that the hotel would be about $85 per night, and meals about $65 a day. |
In many of the small rural areas in which we worked, this actually went OK; wasn't luxurious, but you could make it.
But what the guys would do is:
1) Get one room with two queen beds at $85, and bunk 4 to a room, so about $25 a day each.
2) The hotel served breakfast in the morning, so they'd stoke up on pancakes, bacon, sausage, eggs, toast, fruit, and yogurt.
3) You could also take a "takeout" bag with you, so they'd put in bagels, cream cheese, apples, bananas, etc. in and take it for lunch.
4) From 4:00 to 8:00 in the evening, the hotel would have a "happy hour", where they'd have hot chicken wings, or Swedish meatballs, or yakatori, and a vegetable tray, and big soft cookies out for guests, all free.
So the guys (in addition to their paychecks) were putting $130/day in their pockets x 90 days, and many were the down payments made on boats and big pickup trucks after a deployment ....
