Been away on the bikes

On Friday, given the good weather forecast for the weekend, Mrs B suggested booking a B&B & heading out yesterday and getting futher afield than we usually manage for a day trip. It would also be an opportunity to use the "Air" suits in the UK - it needs to be above 25C to use these comfortably & we got them to use abroad. |
The Interceptor needs a new pair of tyres after 1200 miles "down south" recently, so the Classic 500 got an outing. Mrs B prefers to use her R65LS when I use the RE single.
You would have though we were going away for a fortnight rather than just one overnight with the amount of "stuff" that was packed - but that all went in the BM's panniers, so I wasn't carrying it !
A leisurely start saw us away for 10.30 on Saturday morning, a meander up minor A and more major B roads through the Yorkshire Dales (no "grass growing up the middle" single track lanes this time) to a lunch stop in Masham, an ice cream stop in Middleton-in-Teesdale & onwards to the B&B in a pub near the Beamish Museum. Arrived 5.30-ish after 185 miles, with a top temp just over 30C.
Nice meal & couple of beers before a comfortable night (temperature-wise) - thick, solid walls in an old building keeping the room cool enough to sleep.
After a "set-you-up-for-the-day" Full English we were on the road for 10 this morning to meander southwards by a different route. The Stokesley-Helmsley road ("North Yorkshire TT" as it is refered to locally) was largely traffic-free & no Police activity, though it was spoiled in a couple of places by recent "tar & gravel" bodging that had not been adequately cleaned up.
Lunch was an ice cream just outside York, then home before 4. 165 miles today and 30C the high.
Only the non-standard oversized tyres on the Enfield caused a few "unpredictable handling" moments - nothing dangerous, but a bit unsettling a couple of times. A pair of replacements in the correct sizes will be ordered tonight. Must have been trying a bit harder (or the temps made a difference) as fuel consumption was "up" at only 86mpg (was 91 last time out).
The R65LS was as unhappy as it usually is when the mercury rises - at least this time it didn't have the added burden of high altitudes as well !
The "Air" suits provided comfortable travelling & all-in-all a good weekend's riding.
(ps - it really isn't that "hot" here compared to "normal" summer temps in Europe. It was 43 C when we were staying on Lake Iseo a couple of years ago - now that was "hot" & even with the "Air" suits it was too hot to ride)
