I watched all of them & can't say I was that impressed - seems to me that the production team have run out of ideas & this was just formulaic filler that got a TV slot on the back of his name. Just coincidence that the series aired before Xmas & Guy has a new book out ... |
I think I winced at every episode :
I had that model of Volvo estate as a (fondly remembered) company car - sad to see not one but two of the remainers being butchered & wrecked as a stock car.
The APE "coversion" seemed ill-conceived - the OTT engined, super short wheelbase, narrow track, over tyred monstrosity that emerged was doomed to fail against the Italians.
What emerged from the Land Rover "rebuild" was basically a new vehicle built around the original engine (maybe) - but at least that one worked.
Last night's Trabant traversty was just that - a traversty. While I cheerfully admit to being a fan of the "Rennpappe" (and ex-owner of one that didn't get to see the road again in my hands), the lazy tripe spouted by the commentator was grating & the wanton destruction of what appeared to be a very sound restoration project was painful to watch. The down-bore shots & condition of the removed engine suggested to me that it had been an exchange or rebuilt unit shortly before it went into hibernation. And, again, a set of stupidly oversized wheels & tyres - noticable that the "proper" racing versions had original (or close to original) sized items, so why add rolling resistance / drag with excess width & raise the gearing with oversize diameters that required hacking the bodywork ? It would have been nice to have seen a a bit more of the "competition" that was painted up in the Sachsenring works rally team colours driven by the large chap.
The idea of tacking along the 3 cars behind a mixed grid was odd to say the least - not suprised they got pulled to prevent something catastrophic.
I've enjoyed most of Guy's previous output, but if his future is goofing around with his mate, cackling manically all the while & throwing money at dubious "racing" projects, then I won't be bothering tuning in in future.
