I leave it to the professionals though I can silver plate brass easily with chemicals..

My Father used to restore long case chapter rings, etc TUD. lamp black& shellack for the engraving, then cyanide clean, followed by cream of tartare & silver nitrate . I have seen several days effort ruined by the laquer rubber dragging the engraving black out on to the silvering and with infinite patience back to the drawing board & start again personally St Peter would have been wearing the chapter ring as a B!!*Halo if it were down to me.

He used to pop up on the Model Engineer forums as well, but seems to have gone quiet on there as well.

Maybe gone the way of some of the other RC stalwarts of old & gone over to the darkside (Facebook) ?

Try as I might I just cant get my head around Facebook - nothing seems intuitive about it, so I dont bother.

Bob Rogerson, aka Humbernut, did some awesome stuff (well I thought so) in articles for Real Classic. Machining a new air-cooled cylinder block from solid sticks in my mind.

I used black wax almost like sealing wax melted and run into engraving then as you say grain and polish then silver nitrate two grades course and finisher then laquer you had to make sure the wax had cured ..have just silvered my old Bathroom door hinges to match the chrome bathroom fittings..I also hand lettered white dials that was my favourite dial re- paints and lettering

You do get sensible answers and Questions on Face/Book.. just joined a new F/B site posted a question and instantly got a lot of sensible answers.. and Question ..and a lot of learning

I liked the way he made a Rover single cylinder crankcase from a solid block. A few years ago he bought CNC machines then went to the USA to train how to use them.
