Who's going to enforce it? Not enough police to investigate real crimes.

I'm suspicious it will become part of the MoT test.
And I'm surprised emissions tests are included yet.

Random 10 (say) -year-old car presented for MoT, the tester is going to know its precise original equipment? With respect, dream on ...

The range of maker- and dealer-fitted options is vast, 99% of vehicles aren't modified beyond them, these owners are going to sit still for a vast increase in the MoT fee on the off-chance a tester has to research a vehicle's manufacturer- and dealer-fitted options years before, on the off-chance some miniscule percentage of "tamperers" can be caught?

As I say, the regulation'll go on the statute book because politicians always want to be seen to be Doing Something, it'll make as much difference to real life as Bozo going to a hairdresser.

But if it's on the statute book the test will come when someone has a serious accident on, or in, a modified vehicle. Then watch the Insurers wiggle out of a payment.

Hi Den,

Did the possibility of a serious accident deter you from riding bikes? If not, how's said possibility going to deter a single "tamperer" from simply fiddling with an ECU or fitting a different chip? And the average insurance company is going to equip all its assessors with the tech. to detect something like a remapped ECU, different chip, etc.?

Hi Stuart, I accept your comment but the sort of "modification" you mention was not the same as I envisage. What I was thinking of is the Chopper style mod with tiny front wheel, 6ft forks and high handlebars that stretch the riders arms to limits no person should be subjected to. In other words not very subtle mods. I'm by no stretch of the imagination qualified to judge if they are safe but I'm sure an Insurance assessor wouldn't have a problem with noticing that. The type you are referring to might well go unnoticed and as I said I accept that.

Not what the legislation's aimed at. Such bikes so-modified will be over forty years old, so no MoT, the legislation won't be retrospective. Any such bikes that do exist and are used on the road will be insured by a specialist who's got all the additional engineering backup necessary.

Would be fun if it applies to new cars as the Porsches that my son sells and restores have literally thousands of options ranging from engines ,interior Wheels and brakes bodywork and trim ..Great fun sorting that out My son will tell at a price

Bike insurers did bring in problems for modified bikes a few years ago. I had some companies unable to quote as i had more than 3 modifications. A carrier, a different seat, a screen and chrome parts. It was laughable at the time. I noticed more recently that bike insurers have told me modifications are OK as long as they are not performance parts.
At one time when i told them i had a non original exhaust, they asked why. It was hard to get through that the company has not existed for 40 odd years.
Now, meet the plod who stopped my MOT tester boy and started telling him his car should have a catalyst and quoting dates of manufacture etc. Of course, the boy had the Ford build sheet for his car stating it had never had a cat fitted. Police would never know every cars details going back to 1900 that is for certain. Whoever thinks up these funny games needs to get a life.

OK Stuart, you are most certainly more well read than I and I will retire from the discussion soundly beaten and dejected. If anyone has a Colt .45 and a spare round could I borrow it for a short while so that I can do the decent thing?
