New to me C15S (with pics I hope)

Here's my new little acquisition.

1962 C15 Scrambler, engine C15S3692.

I've got a lot to learn about this as it comes apart and goes back together, not concours but a period-correct woods rider and Moto Giro bike.

I'm going to clean it up, get badges for it, etc, but I'm not going to do any fancy paint jobs, at least not yet! The wheels are pretty groaty looking, I don't know if they'll clean up or not ...

The manuals indicate that the Scrambler models all had Energy Transfer Ignition. This one has a battery strapped onto it, so I'll have to look when I take the primary cover off and see if it has a plain alternator or ET coils.

I know that ET was supposed to be a PITA, but I'd love to refurbish one and make it work as designed ...

Our late friend Mr Ben's B50MX had both Energy Transfer and a battery. Can't now remember quite how they worked though there was a 2 position ignition switch. Nothing he'd done 'rwas how he got it.

My oilyframe B25FS had a big FO capacitor in the electrickery box that was supposed to allow the bike to be started and run without a battery. I was surprised when it did indeed start with a completely flat battery. And it had pointless Boyer ignition!

My B25FS that I used as a trials bike had ET ignition. It even survived underwater so I never understood the complaints.

I've never see a side stand on the right. I wonder how the kicker works with the foot rest in the way? It looks like the footrests are set well back from where they were on the standard ceefer; shortened brake pedal too. But with a rear sprocket like that I bet it sdtands on its rear wheel nicely.

That side stand would suit me Chaz as I can only push a bike on the right side so can be a pain when trying to put the stand down.

I believe the correct kickstart lever with this footrest placement is a long loop that goes UNDER the footrest. This footrest that's on it folds up, but the kick lever still hits it, which means you get about 1/2 turn of the crank per kick.

The motor number (which is over C15S.3551) indicates "Scrambler Special", but there's no telling what sort of shenanigans someone might have been playing with it over 60 long, long years since it were new. I'm only the third owner though (per the Pennsylvania title records) so that's a positive.

Lots of work to do to learn all about this, and assemble the period-correct, most-user-friendly parts for it. I'll get as close as I can to "stock", being that C15 Scramblers, and especially Scrambler Specials, are pretty rare this side the pond.

Yes, that manhole-cover-sized rear sprocket will have to go, since this bike will need to go on the road to get to the good trails ....

No Will as I used to paddle my bikes off. Took a bit of practise to get it right but sure saved a lot of time getting off the start line.

Here you go Will. This was before I perfected paddle starts.I'm on the third row. The old mod always new where I was on the grid, the one on the wrong side of the bike!

Ever tried a Le Man's start Jerry common in production racingthe Velo had this myth that it was hard to start only once did it fail first kick .out of many races ..most embarrassing was at Malory on a 250 two stroke ..push start and it wouldn't fire up everyone disappeared around Gerald's then realised I hadn't switched on the Bloody ignition ..never otherwise had trouble with run and bump...now can't run

I have held the bike for a rider foe a Le Mans start but most of my production races were on my Honda with electric start and my Yamaha RD400 that designed to kick start while in first gear. The only Le Man start I was involved in was when I did the Thruxton 500 race in 1977 and I was the second rider so my riding partner did the start.
