What is this miserable country comming to?
My Daughter Helen and Sam are on holiday in London
In a pub had two pints one a beer one shandy
£11.50...on the south bank of the Thames near to the London Eye a £1.. for a pee.. Daughter knows London and is savvy to its quirks but thats just plain outrageous What tourists must think..

I was in London in February for the bike show. £6 for a pint, needless to say I only had one. I'm glad I moved out in 74.

My daughter now informs me that they are just outside the emissions zone she will have to pay congestion charge to leave flowers on her Grans grave and my Dad's (That I have never seen) because Mortlake cemetery is just inside the zone.She could get a bus and a long walk..
I told her not to bother ...

I grew up in Mortlake Dave. Lovely place but now so expensive. My son got charged £80 for driving through Barnes a coupe of months ago due to the expanding emissions zone. I will be in it next year. Never thought I would say this but I now hate London and what it has become. Even I am thinking of getting out very soon.

Well I got out forty years ago but kept going back A tracing family history and B I worked up there so liked the various areas but must be a nightmare now in 1970 bought my house in Ealing for £6,000 with Maz's mum as a sitting Tennant sold and moved to Dartmoor that house last sold in excess of 700,000 .. the House on Dartmoor after we sold has had six owners in twelve years and last heard was bought by the local council ???
But now it's getting almost impossible for youngsters to get on the housing ladder in the west country as Londoners are snapping up for holiday let's or second homes..

Many of the problems is down to overcrowding and it is only going to get worse, as more people come to this island.

The place I grew up in was idylic - a small village on the Mendips, go back there now and houses have been squeezed in on tiny plots of land, most of the houses where I used to live have been extended or had their gardens built on.

Breaks my heart as the house I grew up in had a garden that was around 60 feet long and around 25 feet wide.

For many years I used to rotovate it for Dad who used to grow just about any vegetable you care to mention in it. Dad used to come home from a hard days work and work in the garden in the summer months would not come inside untill it was dark.

Wind the clock on and the house has been extended and what is left of the garden is a neglected wilderness.

Times change I guess, and not always for the better.

Someone's confused ...

Google Maps says "Mortlake cemetery" is between the South Circular Road and Clifford Avenue, the latter being part of the A316 up to the A4 at the Hogarth Roundabout. As such, it isn't anywhere near the congestion charging zone.

The South Circular does form the southern border of the ULEZ - the Ultra Low Emission Zone. Your daughter can drive outside [u]and on[/u] the South Circular in any old jalopy without incurring any ULEZ charge; given the SC is along one edge of "Mortlake cemetery", she can certainly get within a short walking distance of it, even if she can't park there.

Your daughter can also check the TFL website with the reg. of her car to see if it's liable for a ULEZ charge (£12.50 per day if the vehicle is liable, drive in and out as many times as she likes on that day).

The price of the beer at first glance appears to be outrageous. However here in darkest Leicestershire I knw of pubs charging £5+ a pint, and my local charges £4.95 also outrageous. Despite thie the cost in London appears to be much closer to the prices in rural Leicestershire. It was only about 5 years ago the London beer prices were about 50% dearer than here in the countryside, so it may actually be those outside of London that are seeing the real increases. Don't the government call it "levelling up"?

Other opinions may be available but this one is always correct.

In 1974,when working in a club bar locally, beer was 15 pence a pint. That was expensive being a club. At that time, i needed a mortgage and got one at 11% interest but that soon went up to 14%. It all got me onto the housing ladder so i thank those beer drinkers who helped me get enough money for a deposit. See, drinking pays and it paid me well not to drink it but sell it.

As said loads of time stopped beer drinking when it went over 50p.. just drink spirits or wine but havnt had alcohol now for three years so the whiskey is maturing

I nealy always drink in a Wetherspoons pub now. Still between £1.50 and £2.50 ca pint and a great choice of real ales. Food and wine are great value as well.

Yes that what my Daughter is doing in London down here Neil the fireman get a concession in a couple of pubs run by his mates..

I live in an idyllic rural spot that is seasonally over run by tourists. To counter their disbelief at local beer prices and to make them feel at home one local pub has a sign on the bar that reads "If you are from that London please let us know so we can overcharge you accordingly"

Most big cities are the same now I'm afraid. £4.50 - £5.00 is not at all uncommon in central Brum for beer. Apart from good old 'spoons of course!

You don't have to be crazy to post here, but it helps....

Never mind the price of beer, the price of E10 petrol has now reached £1.89 per litre in Cambs.
