Strikes, inflation, energy prices

What the hell is going on. Rail Unions striking, fuel and energy price going through the roof, and everyone moaning about price increases, everyone blaming Boris and the government. Its out of their hands they cant grow money on trees to keep handing out benefits. Anyway its our money they are spending.
Have people not realised we have a serious war in Europe which is the cause for these issues. Back in 1939 people took a different attitude and united against the fight for freedom in Europe. Much harder sanctions then, shortage of everything, food and petrol on ration, & petrol only for essential workers, most people got no petrol so had to take cars & motor bikes off the road. But everyone just got on with it, many like in Ukraine bombed out of their homes and got killed, but carried on with the 'bulldog' spirit. Now its everyone fighting for themselves, bugger everyone else. If Putins war does develop into WW3 wage increases will be the least of their worries.

Yes, the prices are mostly due to the Ukraine issues. Hopefully that special operation will soon be completed. When Putin runs out of soldiers and tanks maybe. I notice Russia has been using mercenary pilots in their planes. maybe their own pilots are valuable.

Was talking to an old mate of mine yest,his memory is superb.told me a tale of a chat with his dad late 70s.he hadn't been home from work long and his dad was watching the news.Barry he says get down to the garage and fill your car up,this time tomorrow it will be a pound a gallon.wish i could turn the clock back.

We all wish we could turn the clocks back but those times are memories and today is real so we have to deal with it. I have no problem with the Government spending money to assist those in real need or the sick or disadvantaged. What pi***s me off are the handouts to the layabouts and tat who won't work or spend the money on non essentials to satisfy their way of life. Also the implication that only people in categories A to D need the £150.00 rate rebate. There are a lot of people who purchased houses many years ago, now in retirement, whose houses fall into E and above just because the passing of time. Some of them need the help but are excluded. Payments should be made on need not on the basis of assumptions.

Totally agree,this country is so messed up,i found out yest that my registration with my dentist has expired but having paid into the coffers for 52 solid years then i feel its unjust,,got to go private now,,123 quid for just a check up so i wont be going anytime soon.

Shop around if you can. We pay £85 and our dentist teaches dentists.
As to the other question, people are going to starve because of the war and the Afghanistan earthquake is another reminder of people who are really suffering in this world.
Travelling across London yesterday was snail like. I won’t be doing that again in a hurry.

Den, I must agree re the council tax. I have to pay £3250 a year which is the same as a neighbors six bedroom house (we have three) My house was accessed for the tax on a drive by valuation and got lumped into the wrong band of G. I have tried to get a reassessment and have been told it is up to me to find a similar property paying less. The banding is on the net but my house is not the same as any others close by.

I do hope it wasn't the Council that told you to find another property to compare. They have all the records and know full well who pays what. If it was I'd ask for a name and then book an appointment at my local MP's surgery and get him to obtain a better explanation from the Council, they won't get away with a lame answer like that.

Exactly Den, see these people going into food banks with a £500 smart phone in there hand and have probably left their £30k car parked around the corner. One could understand this situation if there was high UNEMPLOYMENT by its the reverse, loads of jobs out there but no one wants to work. Back in the day you would work overtime and even a second job to feed your family. Our parents would not be seen dead taking charity. As far as cars, hardly anyone had one and if so it was an old banger. Motor cycles were the mode of transport for most, some using Cyclemasters and Powerpacs to get to work. Maybe the cost of petrol will see the return of small motorcycles as an everyday form of transport.

Local paper has 2 adverts. Care assistant with skills and training. 9.50 an hour. Cleaner, no skills required, 9.50 an hour.
I did see an advert for a house assistant to look after an old boy at 17 per hour. Cooking cleaning, drives in the old boys car for day trips. That seemed a good wage. A bit like what housewives do. The man has these people working shifts and he pays himself so probably a rich Budliegh resident.

The problem is Den that to do that you would have to pull together some hard information from different sources such as your house tax, your income tax and your assets and mix it with some soft information such as the Job Centre's subjective view on how hard you are looking for a job and how much you are spending on what. That'll cost millions in IT and years of effort and at the end, the civil liberties folk will scream about data privacy and even if it did all happen, there would be a special case where someone deserving was denied so you'd be back at square 1 with people complaining its all so unfair

Sadly, we have to be pragmatic and accept we can help a lot of people, but not all and some of those we did help didn't need it.

Until Putins war ends one way or another things are not going to get any better, for any of us.

I'm enjoying this: I recall we were told we had voted for a high skill/high wage economy and to take back control of our borders.

Illegal entry into the UK has more than doubled and we are far less able to stop it than we were; we have full employment because of the gig economy with virtually no rights/benefits for those employees. Most industries have seen huge wage cuts and demand for wage restraint but I see there is a government plan to eliminate limits on executive and investor returns. OAPs are set for a 10%+ pay rise but the rest of us must try to accept nothing because that will help control inflation. Could they possibly be tempted to vote Tory? In the last year almost 6% of the population of the sixth wealthiest country in the world visited a foodbank.

But our leader keeps telling us it's all fine, as do his press.

Animal Farm summarised all this in 1946.

Yes, I know that, Pantherman, but it's one of the best analyses of what power will do to those unfettered by restrictions or any sense of public good. One of Orwell's suggestions, in fact his guide to writing, was never to use more, or longer, words than strictly necessary. We witness the exact opposite of that every time a politician or business leader is asked even the most basic question. If you look back (on YouTube) to interviews with Margaret Thatcher you'll see her answer any question precisely and thoughtfully. Often, she then, spontaneously, takes time to explain the thinking behind her answers and in the process reveals a coherent philosophy behind her words and actions. Think of her policies whatever you like but her direct answer approach is now a thing of history. The calibre of the current government is appalling: incoherent, self-serving and piecemeal as they scrabble for survival - that is why they will never answer a question with anything but 'blah'. Honestly, it's all in Animal Farm!

Animal farm is correct in some respects

"Four legs good. Two legs bad" becomes "Four legs good. Two legs better" and we all know "Four wheels good, two wheels better" is true.

Also we all know "All bikes are equal, but some are more equal than others" however whether we will ever agree on which ones is a very good question.

Nothing wrong with helping people that need it, but there has to come a time when the doors have to be closed.

If we were the size of the States it would not be so much of an issue, but we cannot keep absorbing people looking for a "safe" country.........is France not safe?
