Farewell Sonny

Sonny Barger, who had an unexpected opinion of H-Ds, has passed away. Can Hells Angels go to heaven?

Good riddance IMHO. A violent thug with a huge criminal record and a dealer in drugs. I do not understand why people, not necessarily on here are lauding the guy.

Other opinions may be available but this one is always correct.

My 1st Triumph was stolen by the Glasgow Blues back in 89 so no respect whatsoever for any HA. Never mind all the other shit associated with them

Organised crime who may occasionally ride motorbikes, and made far worse by weekend wannabes aping the bad ones. Good riddance.

Even people who don't ride motorcycles adulate and admire the Hell's Angels.

When I ride up to someplace on a bike (and it was REALLY bad when I was riding Harley-Davidsons), even people who didn't know anything about motorcycles except that they had two wheels and were called "Harleys" would bring up "Hells Angels" within two minutes of starting a conversation.

They knew nothing about them, only that if you were on two wheels, you MUST have something to do with H-D and Hells Angels ....

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

One of the reasons I got shot of my Harley - there is always that stigma that seems to follow you around if you ride one.

Exactly the same with me.

I had 3 Harleys - a 1954 "50th Anniversary" hand-shift panhead, a 1965 first-year Electra-Glide, and a new 1984 last-year shovelhead Electra-Glide.

As motorcycles, they suited me just fine. Parts are available everywhere (the SAME clutch fits a 1948 through 1984 models), they're easy to work on, long-lasting, and good on the highway, although you have to watch your ground-clearance on twisty roads, and work around the brakes on the older ones.

BUTTTTTT .... the social side of it was a pain in the rear. On my Guzzis or on my old Brits, I generally will have an intelligent, interesting conversation with people when I stop for gas, stop at a rally, or just hanging out.

But with the Harley, all anyone ever wanted to talk about was Jesse James billet Screaming Eagle custom titanium jet kits 118-in big-bore Hells Angels bad-ass get-back-whip chains and vests ... and all the rest of the lack-of-testicle-compensating garbage associated with Harley Davidsons. There are some genuine guys riding Harleys because they like them for what they are, but I found them few and far between.

If I ever get tired of the social part of riding bikes, and become a loner and never talk to anyone, I'd enjoy another Harley. But not till then ....

Then again, a couple of years back a mate and his Mrs rode an organised tour across the US East to West on some new FLTHXSPQRST Harley and said it was his best time ever on any bike.

As Lannis said, there are some genuine guys that ride Harleys.

As bikes go I enjoyed owning my second 1200 Sporty, great fun to ride plenty of get up and go.

The first Harley I had was an old ironhead which I was glad to get rid of, but in it's defence it had lead a hard life before I bought it.

Of course there are counterexamples, I'm sure they're everywhere.

I can only speak for my own experience, riding a motorcycle every day both locally and out on the road.

I'd love to ride a 1955 - 1984 Big Twin of any type as my everyday motorcycle.

Some years ago, I was at a pub near to the Kent Custom Bike show, where my tent was. I was drunk and got into a row with a Hells Angel. My brother said, "let's leave now" I said no, he is in the wrong f*em!" ...The HA laughed and gave us a lift back to the campsite in the back of his transit. The next day I saw him again and he told me it the funniest thing he had heard for ages...I saw Sonny at a distance...I was, and remain ambivalent.

i have friends in the HAMC,and often get invites to their Club open nights and events.my friend say's she feels far safer in the HA clubhouse than any nightclub or local boozer.
