The DT 400 Refurb

Come accross something strange with the electrics which are 6 volts.

The headlamp & tail lamps are 12v bulbs yet the indicators are 6v.

Having taken the flywheel off to clean up everythig behind it, the lighting coil looks newer than the ignition source coil, which makes me think someone may have fitted a 12v lighting coil - but then again it has the original 6v battery which is bone dry.

Only way of finding out for sure is to find out what the resistance of the 6v lighting coil is.

No probs with the ignition as it is CDI so makes no difference what lighting coil is fitted.

All good clean fun.

Maybe unlikely, but something makes me think it wasn’t completely unknown for indicators to have front and back 6 V bulbs in a 12 V system, with the front and back bulbs on each side wired in series.

Or did I dream that…?

TT - I think that would work but never come accross anything wired in that way.

Aparrently the DT charging system was not the best in the world and has a reputation for blowing bulbs - perhaps the 12 bulbs in the headlamp and rear was an effort to stop it blowing bulbs.

I'll get to the bottom of it eventually.

Laugh if you like, but it might actually have been old Albion lorries that had “wrong voltage” bulbs.

Now your talking Dad drove one of those for quite a while before "progressing" to the likes of AEC Mecurys and Mandators.

Indeed I can remember Dad wrestling with the massive steering wheels on those old trucks with him providing the power.

The trucks that he drove before he retired were a world away from those he drove most of his working life.

He really used to enjoy driving the more modern trucks - when he started driving most of them did not even have heaters so he used to wrap an old blanket around his legs to keep him warm on long cold drives, then there was the ice on the INSIDE of the screen to contend with.

Dad had some great stories of driving old trucks, and I was lucky enough to go on some long drives with him in them - mainly the AECs, but also a couple of Dennis's, Bedfords, Scammels and ERFs.

They were great times and are very precious memories.

Usually, neither battery-charging nor indicators are supplied by the "lighting coil"?

OK Perhaps I should have said the coil that provides the power to the rectifier / battery / electrical system.

Should have made it clearer.

If I stick 6 volts onto the battery terminals the indicators work, and not suprisingly the lights give a Joe Lucal like dim glow being 12 Volts.

Guess the best thing to do is fire it up and see what voltage appears accross the battery terminals - that will be a while as I still have it in a state of dis - assembly.

The London Transport RT buses that I used to drive had 12 volt bulbs in series on a 24 volt system.

As part of the activities of a Moto Guzzi rally once, we went on a tour of the "Mack" truck factory and museum in Hagerstown, MD. They had a great collection of Mack trucks from the starting of the company.

It was interesting to see the evolution of the transmission and drive systems, and to think of those drivers taking a 120 HP truck with a dual-range 20 speed transmission, no air conditioning, no power brakes or steering, up over the Appalachian Mountains on roads where you can see your own taillight on the hairpins ...
