Not a good weekend.

Cadwell park was a bit of a disaster. First we had a big power cut in the area which meant only one race and that one was wet. Then my iwo bikes decided to go wrong together. Number two bike my Honds NC30 is still overheating and loosing water. I'm just not sure what to try next. My number one bike Honda CBR400RR decided it would only run on three cylinders. Here they both are before being put on the naughty step.

Sorry to hear that Jerry.

No doubt you will get to the bottom of your issues, my H2 was a pain earlier this year with the oil pump and ignition issues.

Took a long time to solve but got there in the end, your misfire could be something a simple as a plug breaking down - no doubt you have swopped them around to try that.

Where are you loosing water? Probably a stupid question because if you knew that you would have fixed it.

Anyway I am sure that a man of your experience will get it sorted.

Who needs a signature anyway......

Not with a Honda shurely.
As for Bolox, a guy in Private Eye had a Bolox watch. Ever so proud of it he was
and said that whenever anyone asked him the time he just loved getting his Bolox out.

Today I fixed my number one bike. Now running on all 4 cylinders with new set of plugs. Not an easy job to change and had to buy a special Honda plug spanner. Plugs are really deep into the head. Not sure how it's ran so well for the last six years as two of the plugs were loose. Getting very concerned about my number two bike as lost so much water. Begining to think head gasket and a big expensive job coming up. Need to find a replacement bike for festival of 1000 bikes 16th/17th July as I had entered them both.

Great news Jerry - one is better than none.

Guess that if there is no obvious signs of a water leak it is likley to be the head gasket.

Any signs of oil in the water?

Head gasket blowin. Thought of that but didn't like to say.
Try white of egg first to bung it up. Prob what the p/owner did.

Not much help but on the Honda Pan it's usually the waterpump seals gone..

Jerry, I know nothing about modern bikes (know very little about old ones either, but that's another story) but I Googled "overheating Honda NC30" and found a forum "Bikechatforums.com" on which the discussion throws up a few suggestions. This may be of interest or just covering the points you are aware of. Have a look you never know.

Yes Den. First thing was the radiator cap which if set below 1.1 bar will release too early. Its not that as I fitted a higher bar race approved one. I was about to suspect the water pump but it seems they never go wrong. Water seems to be a bit discoloured so looking like head gasket. Bike goes in next week for pressure checks on water system and engine. Thanks for you input mate.

I do not recall you having these problems with the Ducati Jerry. Perhaps you should buy it back. LOL.

I was thinking that too... Quite a surprise given Honda reliability although after the joy of head gaskets, camchain and alternator woes on my CX500 I've been a fan of air cooled bikes ever since!

Jwerry I see that nice Mr Miles has been out and about today on some old British single, a Gold Star or some such, and giving it the beans. he said it was running perfectly. Perhaps you should get one of those.

Sometimes water pump leaks are not obvious. If the oil is clean then it might be coming out of the water pump drain hole which is usually hard to see. Some staining is a give away. Worth a look.

Its the head gasket allowing super hot combustion products into the cooling medium thus causing
localised overheating and raised coolant temperatures.
Just ride faster to dissipate.
Simples.

There is a test kit of a liquid and some bits of plastic that will detect exhaust gases in the water. Boy uses it on cars for head gasket test. Have a look for a kit Jerry
