Still got it

I managed to bag a squirrel today. Buggers destroy the bird feeders don't like hurting anything only spiders but they are vermin

And what was the weapon of choice?

I had to take out a young Rabbit in the spring as despite best efforts it kept destroying the seedlings.

That was with my .22 meteor.

Well Andy had a plink with the 177 airpistol just frightened the bugger so out came the 32.calibre walking stick that got him but it's too powerful and I do have a public right of way behind my garden and was worried about a ricochet as it is a 32 cal ball.

There's lot of rules and regs about squirrels and their humane removal (I've recently had to research as there were two of the buggers living in the loft) but are some still really taking pot-shots with some airgun and hoping for the best? Hardly effective or humane to possibly wound an animal leaving it to die a slow death.

Previously I used a loaned live trap & air pistol to catch & dispatch. Carcases to landfill.
Complies with the law.

Apparently not. Catch one in a live trap and you need to take it to a vet to be despatched. I couldn't bring myself to shoot an animal in a cage anyway.

Me neither PM. When I kept goats I became a quite self-sufficiency devotee. A neighbour sold me a 410 shotgun and whilst field-walking the dog on a glorious spring morning I shot a woodpigeon. When I picked up its warm, soft but lifeless body and saw the trickle of blood from its beak I felt physically sick with remorse. I gave the gun away.

Not completely true in the UK.

Any vermin that is caught must be destroyed and not let go back into the wild. That is a criminal offence.

When I trap squirrels for schools on their premises, usually roof spaces, I have to humanely destroy them whilst on the premises and still in th e catch traps.
Air rifle usually, witnessed by one of their staff.
Used to be the caretaker but they have fancy names now like maintenance manager or facilities manager.

Couple of years back we had a plague of rats they came from neighbours wood piles because of the rage of wood burning stoves... I laid lengths of guttering with a wire cage over the tops along there runs..the birds couldn't get to the poison pellets I got rid of the rats as they went back to their nests and the young died as well ..didn't worry me a bit they are vermin and you buy rat bait over the counter all legal..

I bought a .22 air rifle a few years ago and upgraded the spring inside so it was full power and humane for small vermin (not legal BTW). I was having problems with RAT's from a nearby farm. Thing is although it's all set to go with the correct hunting pellets I've never used it. It's really accurate with a scope sight and it can be a humane way of dispatching small rodents. However, I've realised I don't have the stomach to kill things even if they are causing me problems. Secondhand air guns are really difficult to sell plus I wouldn't like the idea of someone wiping out wild life and pets with it; so it stays stored in the barn.

Poisoning vermin isn't humane so I wouldn't do that either.

I reckon you have a right to feel worried Dave, I think it is illegal to fire an air weapon within a certain distance of a Public right of way so I'm sure the police wouldn't be any too happy if something occurred after the use of a .32 calibre weapon!

Today agree I did make sure the squirrel was on the ground and I was aiming from head hight and towards the potting shed so the round would go into the sodden lawn .....I was dispatched straight away...it took me all of ten minutes to pump up and load so won't do that again..
