True Devotion

If you had a lousy windy raining night think of the Motorcycle riders and car drivers who are competing in the Exeter trial overnight a 148 miles in 14 hours..I used to be chief Marshal on the North Devon sections and did that for 20 years
Run by The oldest M/C club ..Still a member..

I would imagine my Dad would have been involved as he was living in Exeter and regularly entered in trials events, often, my mum would be on the back during some of the muddy hillclimb outings.

Memories of happy daze for me on two wheels and four.Never mega successful on either but enjoyable, hard going that distance in an open Dellow when the rain never stops.

Had to look that one up.

Never seen or heard of a Dellow in this land, although a few of the 500 they made are bound to have made it over here...military transfers etc.

Looks like fun.

Dellow was one of the best trial cars Lannis. It is fun to watch these stripped out old cars climbing the the lanes and steep hills.

Living in Birmingham Dellow was a locally made car.We also ran Sporting trials cars from Cannon and Alexis. I had more success with a VW Beetle than the pukka trials cars. Put down to lack of skill and poor throttle control !

Apart from specials modified cars used as well as vintage but interesting to see the development over the years I have been involved Beetls and Imps obviously Google as weight over the back wheels but surprisingly 2CV's were useless until the got them sorted with weight in font ot the front wheels now very competitive as are Golf's..
Fingle Hill a two mile climb but at the top was a stop start section which I was in charge of many times riders were so exhausted that we used to let them time to recover.. they had to stop by me then I would let them go then around a right angle bent they had to stopp within two lines cars and bikes if you crossed a line it was a fail ..this was towards the end of the trial so competitors really tired.. Funny thing was next day after the trial would meet many competitors at Hatherliegh Autojumble .. looking for parts..

I well remember the stop and restart. Dellow was not allowed town and country tires so the best we could use was pirreli extraflex

My memory's a bit foggy but back in the early 60's I was apprenticed at a R/Royce and Jag main dealership with another apprentice whose father owned Starley's Garage in a Brighton backstreet.
Lionel Starley used to do hill climbs in a 1930's Morris 8 fitted with a Jag 2.4 engine. I do remember that there was no room for the front seats as the engine and gearbox came right back into the cabin. It was known as 'The Miracle Morris'.

Another snippet added to save cocking up the attachments in my previous.........

Lionel's father was accredited as being the inventor of the modern bicycle.

I well recall fitting a Cooper S top end into his Sprite which he successfully campaigned at home and in Europe.
