First one of 2023

Just back from my first ride of 2023. Did around 120 miles. Took my winter hack Suzuki Bandit but the roads were bone dry and no sign of any salt on the roads. Was going to take my Yamaha but somehow I have really taked to the Bandit. It has stainless steel exhaust system and race can and just sounds so nice. Judging by the amount of bikes out I think a lot of riders made the most of todays weather. Looking a bit chilly next week so may be a while before I venture out on two wheels again.

I rode this morning. I must be bloody mad. Started chilly but not too cold. Standing water everywhere & lots of mud. Many fields still underwater around Rivers Wye & Severn. Headed into mid-Wales and it all got rather worse then we'd anticipated. Thankfully I have heated gloves and really good merino base layers and my bike has heated grips & seats. There was snow on the hills. At higher altitude there was some slush on the road between wheel tracks. Stopped in a layby and the puddles were frozen. Sod this for a lark! Very cautiously with traction control activating several times. Headed for lower altitudes and a nice warm cafe for a Full English. On the way home on one main road that had been flooded had to weave between abandoned cars that idiots had attempted to drive thru' deep water. It seems the car of choice for these twats is a 4X4 pickup

Glad you enjoyed it Will, but the cold 'n wet doesn't tempt me out.

Sprid, It was just a matter of seizing an opportunity when it arose. Last week was torrential every day & next week its scheduled to be very cold (I have cancelled tomorrows ride!).

My modern bike's MOT was due Nov 25th but I have to book it a day or two ahead and with the Xmas and New Year closures plus nearly two months of snow and rain ever since with a just an occasional dry morning I've chickened out on making an advance booking. It won't get done for a while as the forecast for the week ahead is for heavy rain, gales and snow. Stupidly I sold my bike trailer last October as I hadn't used it for two years but could do with it now. (Sigh).

My first run was last weekend. As always, I'm thinking this can go - I have my eye on the inevitable BMW that I thought I'd missed out on earlier this year. In the meantime, I'm torn to bits wondering, should I or shouldn't I part with it? Sigh. Three bikes would mean the car goes on the street but being 6'4" means I am a giant on the BSA - in fact I sit significantly higher on my drop handlebar touring bicycle!! Ho hum, what to do...

Dave, Ten Tors in jeopardy now due to the greedy landowner winning the court case so he can monetise the moor. We are waiting for what comes next and hoping the Duchy come out strongly in favour of wild camping. The army certainly will but I guess it's a question of whether other landowners jump on board - the townies who trashed the moor during the pandemic really didn't help. Sad news.

Twice the value of the BMW. Odd World we have where the very old and worn is worth more than the newer and more reliable. Just look at MK 3 Ford Escort and Capri prices now. Objects of desire and almost out of reach. Just bought an Escort convertible for a Grandaughter and the price will steadily rise in the next few years. She had already made about 800 pounds on Her old Ford Fiesta.

The 'right' to wild camp was removed from much of Dartmoor in a case brought by 'newcomer' landowners in the High Court last Friday.
