Gentlemens` motorcycling.

Very expensive to buy brand new. Some around here have a very rattly engine.

Very expensive to buy old too! I think the best thing Frank Westworth ever said was that he, 'Prefers to allow others the benefits of ownership.' I wish I'd come up with that line!!

Had a Series "C" Rapide for 28years and only did 8k miles on it ! much preferred to go out on the Venom or Super Rocket

I see a few people enjoying their Vincents. The worst part is they often miss out of looking around at the other bikes when out on a group run and they get a sore throat yapping to all the admirers. I like to look over the quality on these bikes but not something i would want to own at all as they are before my era. Good that people still want them and prepared to pay 50k which is supposed to be an investment. Might not be desired in 20 years though if the petrol engine haters keep at it

I had a Shadow for about six months just did nothing for me the handling was lousey though quick sold it to Conway Motocycles for what I paid for it still have the handbook but no covers

I was offered one a few years ago for £50K but the wife wouldn't agree to re-mortgaging the house.

I had one for four years, hitched to a Wessex side car. Did the Elephant and Dragon rallies with it. When we had just two boys in family we went touring around Europe with it. Great bike. £125 from Deeprose Bros of Catford. Family got larger so moved on to a three wheeler then a car.

I just bought Merino wool socks. Thats all i want to wear now for my feet. Wear them in bed too.

That really is an impressive and interesting contribution, Sprid. What an excellent glimpse into history! Thanks for posting.

I've never had a touring bike per se, but comparing the amount of stuff I take to rallies now - as opposed to when I started attending the damn things in the mid-1970s - I wonder how I survived as a teenager.

Postcards, address labels and stamps (as recommended on the 19th Century list) are essential to me these days, as I send messages back to my daughter and a few ex-rallyists to prove I'm still out there in a tent at exotic places like Belper, Keighley, Saltburn-on-Sea, Odiham, Ripley, Falkirk, Ashton-under-Lyne and Kettering.

It may be worth pointing out that they don't think I'm sane.

Like Prodigal I wonder how I survived on my 250 Superdream with the sports bag bungeed to the tank - I toured Yorkshire and the Lake District two up on that with no more than we could get into that Adidas bag! Astonishing! Now I need about a year's preparation, servicing and packing to go away for the weekend!!

We've had similar reactions.

At a gathering of my daughters in-laws, just after one of our trips, I heard someone ask my daughter why we did such things at our age. "They're my parents, that's what they do" was her response.
On another occasion at a bike thing one of our lady riding friends was asked a similar question. "Because they can" was her tart reply in a way that inferred the asker was a knob!

We on this site all belong to the same club. In my 80th year people think it's strange that I still ride motorcycles, my mind doesn't!

Im not far behind you Ian and some are shocked that I'm still on the race tracks. We have to keep going as long as we can and as long as we still enjoy it because we don't have to prove anything to anyone.
