Won't be out on two wheels for a while

Had to do a delivery job in the van today. Can't believe the state of the roads. Must have got through a whole container of screen wash. Gritter and salt spreaders out everywhere so until the rain arrives and washes it off I wont be out on two wheels for a while. Don't mind the cold but don't want my bike to rot away.

I raised a claim on the W. Sussex Highways website after my (car) tyre burst on Friday and the wheel rim bent when dropping into a non visible pothole at 20mph. They certainly seemed to have made it as difficult as they could to make a claim.
Photos were taken after most of the road-wide inch or two of flooding had drained away.
Since the intro of GPS and a long-way-round bypass 5 yrs ago this country lane has become a rat run to the nearby industrial estate and offices. It's forever being 'repaired' by a contractor who chucks a bucket or two of tarmac in the holes and within a couple of weeks it has all broken out because there's never been a proper foundation for today's heavy traffic.
I had to call out a mobile tyre fitter as my car doesn't have a spare and it was too damaged for the Skoda supplied gloop and air canister kit. Fortunately the new tyre sealed.

Ian today I was more concerned with the amount of crap coming up off the roads. Haven't got a screen wash on my helmet visor.

Hi Jerry I suppose I was, I started with a LI Lambretta on which I did over 50,000 miles then I came over to the dark side and bought a motorcycle. The rest as they say is history.

I am sticking with 4 wheels while ice is about. Interesting these tarmac repairs. Someone tripped on a large piece of tarmac missing in the road in Exmouth so a team was quickly sent out. They filled a patch about 1 foot by 6 inches. Later that day, the road sweeping team came along to sweep up any gravel they left and the whole tarmac repair got sucked up. Victoria Way Exmouth. My boy saw all this happening from the garage

My 15 mile each way country commute (on an A road) has become a series of chicanes around potholes, carp in the road and massive puddles caused by blocked drains. Like every other aspect of public works, the maintenance teams have been cut to the bone. There are few white lines or functioning cats eyes.

I wouldn't want to ride a fast bike anywhere at the moment - I'm not sure the stress of continually avoiding deadly obstacles is worth it.

If you do go out, avoid the railway bridge at Pulborough. BIG hole under the water. My chum has the matching rear wheel to the front, shown here. A couple of others in the same group also got their wheels done in the same hole.

Only if the council knew about it, apparently.

But it seems a report of the hole was lodged the day before. So he may be lucky, but he's not holding his breath. Someone could have been killed.

I'm half expecting the Highways reply that the potholes hadn't been reported which I don't believe as the road had been that state for nearly 3 weeks. I've half a mind to ask for their records under an FOI request as it has become in that state and flooded several times a year for the past 20 years.

Jerry, In some respects you are fortunate. My local council is so broke they can't afford salt. They haven't done the road thru' the village since before Christmas and the roadside salt bins haven't been refilled since 2021. Mind you they can still afford £250k on 200yd cycle lane no one uses and a "free" newspaper delivered to every household to tell us what a magnificent job they're doing.

Biggleswade is expanding at an alarming rate and you would think that with all the extra revenue that brings to the Council they wouldn't need to increase the rates, but they will.

That sounds about right Will. We have cycle lanes everywhere and no one uses them but at least the traffic jams are now longer so more ammunition to the air pollution do gooders.

If you want to ride all year round, move to a country that doesn`t have ice on the roads in winter, like Queensland in Australia, occasional black ice in Toowoomba on the Darling Downs where I slid through a stop sign in my Toyota Lite Ace one winter and scared the pants off a driver coming through on the main street.

Two roads near to me go to the Hamlet of Woodmanton they have been closed for a couple of years now because of potholes ..council just put up signs saying unsuitable for vehicals so there's only one way in and out unless you have a 4x4
