New Gold Star

Just read the MCN road test of the new Gold Star against the R.E. Interceptor they do say that compared to the R.E. it's better made and obviously Brit looking a stainless exhaust top quality wheels compared to the R.E.cheap wheels and tyres ..so a plus riding position similar BSA lower seat hight..on the road the Enfield handles better though cheap tyres could make it a lot better the BSA not as good but testers say the BSA dose have a lovely punch out of corners..the BSA better fuel consumption but the Enfield better performance by far..though not as well finished.. also BSA £800 dearer the BSA engine built by Rotax.. a shame that Enfield has downgraded the wheels and tyres from the original when launched..

R.E.cheap wheels and tyres

That wasn't what they said. RE aluminium rims are not polished is all - better IMO, as they are anodised so don't require polishing. The RE wheels have not been "downgraded since launch" at all. At launch, same as now, some models got clear anodised rims, others got black anodised - all down to the tank & mudguard colour.

The change to Indian made Ceat tyres (which were developed for the bike) was due a change in taxation by the India Govenment - imported items started to get taxed to give an incentive to Indian manufacturers to develope competitive products. Given that RE make a whole lot more bikes than the new BSA are ever likely to, this will obviously cost them a lot more than it costs BSA in extra costs to import a limited number of foreign made tyres.

MCN fuel consumption figures are, at best, a bad joke that bear no relation to reality.

Only quoting MCN and will admit the interceptor that I test rode a friend of mine has one had really nice polished rims better than the Triumph I had and of course the price has gone up
For an inferior look to my mind..
The BSA should just be called a BSA in no way dose it represent a Gold Star..

Triumphs were always BSAs weren't they, from just after the war. Then BSAs became Triumphs in the 70s. Or were they then Nortons or Villiers?

And we all know Jags are Fords. Or are they something else now? And weren't Rovers Hondas before they became Chinese? Or was that MG?

At least Moto Guzzi are still Piaggio, I think. Or are they Aprilia?

Seem to remember that Harley Davidson stuck their name on many motorcycles.. and also almost every vehical on the road has electronic chips and accessories from the far East..even tyres. so why worry..

I put this post on here thinking it might be interesting discussion as the first I think proper road test of the BSA over a fair distance .
The conclusion is the BSA is probably better quality it doesn't have the performance of the Enfield ..it is dearer so I won't be buying one as my Ariel would do exactly the same thing except the electric start..and having ridden the Enfield Clubman version was impressed ..but that was some time back .. before everything went Tits up..

There are a lot of Enfield 650s around Devon now and i suspect it is due to the association of older people with 650 twins in the 60s and 70s. The single cylinder BSA will not appeal as mush as the twin. Both bikes seem to be good enough for the leisure rider.

I have thought the newer Enfields pretty good. Mind you, newer as in 2012! I had a Woodsman that was truly excellent - I only let it go because the high pipe was anti-socially loud and despite my regular trips to Lidl (stainless scouring pads 89p for 4) I couldn't shut it up and the high pipe also made throwovers a fire hazard and prevented camping. Sad: a truly excellent bike with electric start and classic type looks but in a niche of its own.

That is one conclusion.

Nathan The Postman comes to the opposite conclusion - that the RE is better "quality" in terms of build and finish than the BSA.

I have sat on a BSA at my local dealer & didn't thivk that anything about it shouted "quality" - finish generally OK, but nothing special. I look forward to having a spin on one when the weather improves, by which time my hand will, hopefully, be up to riding. Just befoer Xmas when I sat on the BSA I couldn't move my thumb enough to grip the twistgrip. But a recent try in the garage on the Classic 500 I found that I could get a good hold on the twistgrip without undue discomfort.

Thanks for posting that Nigel. Really enjoyed a proper riders comparison. After watching it I am leaning more towards the BSA.

Personally, I would never expect a 650 single to perform as well as a 650 twin, but people don't buy singles for their performance, rather for their simplicity and character!

You don't have to be crazy to post here, but it helps....

You can pic up good 500 single for peanuts now and easy to work on Ariels are cheap so are the Beezers.. and AJS..

Simon I meant a 50's/60's one with swing arm suspension. Riding that would not be too good for the farmers !

Ah, yes. The cream of the crop is the first s/a one with the alternator chaincase, 8" SLS brake but mag ignition iirc. I'd like a B33 from those years '54/55

One of our group did that and very convincingly too except for one deliberate clue. If someone made comment on that Goldie he woudl usually say " all that glisters is not gold" and leave it at that.

My 1955 B33 has what you want. 12 volt electrics Pearson electric start,home brewed twin leading shoe brakes and LED lights so you can see at night.

Sorry she is a keeper. I have had the old girl about fifty years. Had a side car on her for some time. She still steers true the engines very nice not fast 80mph about right. Acceleration is quite good since I fitted an early Goldie inlet cam. The best thing that I ever did was fit an electric start. My right knee loves it. The bike was once a Claud Rye display bike. I will put up a picture if you like.
