Reputedly the first loco to do a 100mph
The City of Truro beat it but not officially it was also the first vehicle to exceed that speed..

Post-WW2, as Doncaster and other LNER Works caught up with the maintenance backlog, loco being dismantled for a heavy general overhaul, it was a not-irregular occurrence for frames cracked badly enough to simply collapse in a heap when the boiler was removed ...

New frames fabricated ...

That's one of the reasons I asked my earlier question ...

It seems that the rear two thirds of the frames are original, part of the cab sides some of the motion and the wheel splashers. Not a lot it seems.

Happy Birthday indeed. In 1968 , my late Uncle, who worked for the railway all his life, took it from Norwich to Peterborough. He passed away early this year at 93.
It came to Norfolk last year, I was lucky enough to enter the cab through the tender corridor, sit in the drivers seat, hold the regulator lever, and play a tune on the whistle.
Speaking to the driver and fireman, the problem seems to be getting some decent coal.
When my uncle was a fireman prior to becoming a driver, He did Norwich to Liverpool St and back most days, many times on the Oliver Cromwell, seven tons of coal for the round trip.

I had a ride on the Oliver Cromwell footplate with my young son Graham when it was at Bressingham Steam Museum in Norfolk many years back..

Hi Geoff,

Curiously, all coal isn't the same ... LNER engines had wide fireboxes to suit Yorkshire coal, GWR engines had narrow, deep fireboxes to suit Welsh coal.

1924 British Empire Exhibition, both the LNER and the GWR claimed their loco (Flying Scotsman and Clun Castle iirc) was the most powerful. 1925 they swapped engines to test the claims, the locos that went to the other's system both hauled several wagons of the 'correct' coal.

Turned out the GWR Castles were the more powerful, led Gresley to make several changes to the LNER A1's.

The first thing he did was increase the valve travel on his Pacific's after sneaking around the GWR engine and doing some measurements.

I spent a day driving a steam engine at my local preserved line almost twenty years ago. At the end of our official day the driver said he had to go down the line to take a maintenance wagon back. 'Want to drive?' I think I was on the footplate for about eight hours in all. Sitting parked up out in the countryside on a very frosty late afternoon as the sun set and the track gang finished as I sat in a toasty cab that smelled of steam, oil and fire was absolutely fantastic.

We used to have rides in the small steam trains at Exmouth docks. H and S would have a fit now finding 10 years olds riding next to the burner box

I was at a conference in the York railway museum a while back. We all went roaming round the museum at lunchtime and I reckon about 1/2 came back. I'd done my presentation in the morning so was flexible for the afternoon. I finished up talking business with a client in the inspection pit underneath mallard ( I think)
