Sorry but need to ask medical question

Any of you on statins? If so did you have any side effects. I have to make a choice if I want to go on them doctors leaving it to me. I think its because Im now 18

Yes - I'm on them, Jerry. I've had no problems at all. They lower cholesterol levels, apparently. The brand name for mine is Atorvastatin.

The Daily Mail doesn't like them. Don't know why.

Normally, most people take one a day. I take two on Drs instructions and have been for 10 years. No side effect at all and they are for cholesterol. I have hypertension(blood pressure too high) so have another tablet for that as well as an aspirin and another heart protection drug. No effects from those either.
They are perfectly safe Jerry but travel insurers will load your policy and it may become near 1000 to go abroad if on a ship. They do not like customers with high cholesterol.
If the DR recommends these drugs, i would do it rather than risk the stroke, heart attack etc.
All my medicines are for safety and protection from heart attacks that i have never had so far.
I take two 20mg Atorvastatins per day.

Me too, Atorvastatin. First given to me at stroke unit.
Likewise no problems.

If you didnt have an Abdominal aortic aneurysm check at 65, i would think about having one but always bear in mind these insurers. They found mine and it is checked annually and still the same size as 5 years ago. If it bursts, it is lights out time with maybe a few hours to tidy up loose ends. They do not stent these now as risk is not so high if monitored and blood pressure controlled. My Brother lived about 12 hours when his let go but he did not know he had one. At least if mine expands, they can intervene before it lets go.

Thanks guys, looks like a thumbs up then. Just strange my doctor left it to me. He is the one that does my race medical every year and once again told me how very fit I am but just need to lower my cholesterol a bit and I have always had high blood pressure so it basicaly to help in the future re a stroke. Only strokes I remember were very nice ones

In my humble opinion you should be concerned more with the high blood pressure. If you are not taking pills to control that I would ask him why.

I was on statins a few years ago ,I had to stop taking them because of side effects which was severe pain in my knees and shoulders once i stopped the pain stopped the BBC did a program on statins some time ago and its problems

If the problem is high blood pressure and cholesterol, then there are other ways to deal with it rather then take statins.

I lowered my blood pressure from 140/95 to 125/80 by retiring - well actually by not sitting on my backside all day in front of a computer, by not eating out the sandwich shop at lunchtime, by walking and cycling more, and by drinking less.

Go back to the GP and ask for the non drug options.

If he's the same as my doc, he says older men need statins at some point for two reasons, we're men and getting older = the two main symptoms of rising cholesterol.

Sounds like you've been given the same suggestion as me, reduce slightly too high cholesterol with "lifestyle changes"?

Jerry - it was most negligent of me not to have emphasised one vital point. Taking statins does NOT mean that one has to abstain from alcohol.

A few years ago I picked up my fortnightly supply from the pharmacy, then nipped into the Wetherspoons on t'other side of the road and washed one of the tablets down with a pint of Wells Bombardier.

Perhaps my GP wouldn't have approved, but I survived.

Statins, I believe, should be taken without food. I also believe that Jerry considers beer essential food so if I was you I wouldn't encourage that.

Same as most on here been on them for yonks seems the generic pill that Docs prescribe to lower cholesterol the only way out is eat differently..one a day for me but on nine tabs at moment ..two three times a day on two time the rest one a day and one early morning..

My wife is on one 40 mg per day (Astorvastatin). I'm on one 20 mg per day (Simvadtatin). No problems. Don't believe all you read in the papers, be guided by the people that should know.

I take mine last thing at night so no food as i sleep. I think most would take them late

My doctor asked me if I would try them, so I did after a month the pains in my muscles were to much to bear so I stopped taking them. I went back to normal after about a week. When I later had my annual diabetics test I asked the nurse how my cholesterol was she said absolutely fine. I asked her why the doctor tried me on statins, her reply, they always do that.

I also take them late. Prescribed initially after my heart attack 2006 and upgraded a tad after my stroke last year. No probs so far.

My Atorvastatin were the first pill I had to take regularly I had a break when I moved from one doc to the other didntvmake any difference..well before Cancer and Heart attack..Maz the same

I had a blood test last year for my PSA, but they also did cholesterol test at the same time. A couple of weeks later I got a letter through telling me to loose weight (I'm 10 stone!), take more exercise (I cycle 70 miles a week) and to start on Statins. I threw it in the bin. I had the same thing 5 years ago and that time I was called in to see the GP. He said, "I don't know why you've been sent to see me. Your cholesterol level is a bit high, but most of it is good cholesterol, so there's no problem at all."

I think the NHS may be on a bung from pharmacy companies for dishing these things out - they certainly seem to give them out like smarties at a kiddies party...

You don't have to be crazy to post here, but it helps....

I am also somebody with a negative reaction to statins. I suffered muscle pain, joint pain and tiredness. I stopped taking them and was back to normal.

After consulting my GP he changed to a different statin and the symptoms returned. Then they prescribed a third version...same result.

Then my GP I should have a blood test to determine my cholesterol level. The result showed my level was 4.5, which he agreed was a level that did not need lowering by the use of statins. He also admitted that the side effects were very common, but the NHS had a policy of prescribing statins to "the elderly" . I forgot to add that prior to thr specific blood test referred to on here my cholesterol level had never been checked. One Woners who gets the commission for prescribing all those unnecessary statin tablets.

Incidentally Jerry what is your cholesterol level?

Other opinions may be available but this one is always correct.

I was put on them 20+ years ago when diagnosed with elevated cholesterol levels. My father had had a heart attack due to high cholesterol when I was in my early 30s & we (myself & siblings) were advised to have cholesterol checked regularly. I was fine until I hit 40-ish, then levels started to rise.

Change of diet made no difference, so prescribed the lowest dose of Simvastatin. Fine for a couple of years, then cholesterol levels raised again. Dose of Simvastatin doubled & that was when the fatigue & muscle aches started. Changed to Rosuvostatin & fatigue and muscle aches remained. Came off statins and on to alternative, non-statin, cholesterol control medication & fatigue / aches went.

Statins seem to work fine for some but not for others - you won't know which group you come in to until you try.

It's possible for statins to combine unfavourably with other medication - hence the adverse reactions some of the posters here have experienced.

Here's a link to an NHS information page. There's an allusion to "regularly drinking large quantities of alcohol" as being a potential problem for statin-takers. Killjoys. They'll be recommending giving up crystal meth next.

Another expert! had a medical revue & blood test which also checked cholesterol level which was found to be satisfactouy doc then added atorvastin tablets to my repeat pescription when i asked why? he replied well you are of a certain age and likely to be developing dodgy arteries/veins so will help to reduce the risk speaking to the Pharmasist some years ago now NHS decided it was cheaper to buy and distribute the tabs rather than pay for heart ops and care ,I am checked annually and still not critical,so give mine to herself,who was prescribed them to help with her high levels. I allready get my medication in a carrier bag so bugger taking any more drugs until I have to

Exactly right it was part of the so called government scheme to help make people be fitter in the food intakes and not getting high cholesterol readings leading to heart attacks..

I got cought up in the "Men of a certain age" merry go round and was prescribed Atorvastatin. Lets just say it affected bowel movements, Got to go and go now ! Not ideal when in the middle of a field fixing a tractor. Doc changed them to Simvastatin, got headaches taking those and stopped taking them. A couple of years later had a cholesterol check, result 4.1 Now got enough bother with the Parkinson's drugs and cancer treatment not to worry over statins that I doubt where needed'

Leon, you are not old enough for them yet.
I only take just over 400 tablets a Month at the moment. My 4 a day diabetes tablets are no longer needed. I also have a very large repeat prescription package with the Tramadol and Gabapentine needing an extra signature. Took me 3 visits for them to allow me enough tablets for my holiday
