Sitting in the carpark at Tesco watching the people and cars the majority now have LED lights some have very elaborate ones curved and combined driving and indicator not many are separate the rear lights are on some cars abysmally small ..I wonder how mutch it costs to replace these units
My daughters old car with LeED indicator repeaters on the mirror cost £ 200 per side to buy and fit..
When they failed ..

Dave, many of the headlights are over 1000 pounds.A rear lens for my Volvo just for the rear fog warning is about 160 pounds and that has just one normal filament lamp. Some Porsche headlights are well over 1200 pounds. My boy normally sells pattern lamps for the old cars but they are not available for newish ones. Not had an led lamp fail on a car but i dont have the car for very long. LED lamps are a novelty and no better than a good halogen. Mt LED headlights are very bright but lack range that halogen lights and good old round reflectors give

I have an LED light on the F750GS. Its superb and a lot better than the two conventional halogen headlights on the 10 yr old Audi A3. Maybe that's saying more about Audi downspeccing the lights to make you want to upgrade, but I'm still very happy with the visibilty on the BMW.

LED lights are here to stay, in vehicles, industry and domestc use. After all, how many of us have stated on here how good they are in the garage

I dont mind the LED headlights, mine even have motors to turn the lamps as the car corners. They dont dazzle oncoming vehicles as no one has flashed me. Definitely the future is LED lamps but some are beginning to fail on cars over 3 years old.
Interesting is the Hyundai cars version with multiple lenses and no real headlight shape. All very good for the new owner but will be very expensive when they fail. Odd lights on the Volvo front corners where a single small lamp lights as you go around corners and road junctions. Just one lights up for left or right turns, It lights up the kerb and pavement.
Vauxhall have LED lamps that switch around many different reflectors if a car is coming toward you. High tec gone mad. I have an internal screen that updates fuel use every 10 miles and plots it on a graph so you can try and improve performance but what the hell good is that.

High tec gone mad. I have an internal screen that updates fuel use every 10 miles and plots it on a graph so you can try and improve performance but what the hell good is that.

When I was a consultant at The Transport Systems Catapult I worked with a lady called Ruth who does engine control systems for a living. She says the instant fuel readings most cars give should be treated with a pinch of salt. Error band is ~50%.

It all evens out over time so the overall figure won't be too far out. Maybe that's why your car now gives a figure over 10 miles

Not sure about the "LEDs are here to stay" thing.

Fifteen or so years ago, Compact Fluorescent Bulbs were absolutely the thing in homes. The government even made the old incandescent bulbs illegal to sell, since CFBs were going to save the world.... Now CFBs are considered a poisonous pollutant, and the government is regulating THEM out of the market.

All dependent on who stands to profit from the latest "climate emergency" scam.

Also Lannis 99.9 % of LED lamps are manufactured in China and as with electronic chips there have been problems ..we rely on China and far Eastern countries too mutch..

Fluorescent lighting contains mercury but disposed of properly, the mercury is recycled. The white powder in the tubes does seem to cause a septic reaction if you are cut by a broken tube. I used to have to store old tubes in a solid box for disposal in a tube crushing machine. I have noticed many of the 600 x 600 LED lamps the same as in my garage are beginning to discolour the white plastic sheet. This happens in the cheap ones. Have a look when you see some fitted in a shop and the whole centre section is grey and the edges are bright with some faulty individual LEDs apparent. Life is quite short for these if used all day.

Where I used to work, when I started there the workshop lighting as 400W mercury vapour lamps - 20 of them. Lamps lasted well, but were pricy to replace and if the power went off they had to cool for 10 minutes before they would restart - and they were 400W each.

So I removed the ballasts from the lamp housings & replaced the mercury lamps with 150w CFL "growing lamps" that used the same ES base. Near instant start-up and, when new, too bright to look at. After around 2 years they need replacing, as they had gone dim, but cheaper to replace than the mercury lamps (and cheaper to run).

Next swap was to LED "corn cob" lamps designed to replace the CFLs - quite a bit pricier than the CFLS but a small energy saving (125W) and, when installed, as bright as a small sun. After a couple of years the indivdual LEDs were clearly "burned" in the centre and the lamps needed replacing again.

As the "corn cob" lamps cost more than CFLs & didn't last any longer I went back to those. Biggest issue was getting them delivered in one piece - in one instance every one of the dozen lamps in a case was broken on arrival, as were the contents of the replacement case.

Disingenuous marketing doesn't help with either CFLs or LEDs - the quoted "life" isn't a "mean time between failures" but an indication of operating hours until the lamp output reduces to (typically) 50% of new. Still working, but need changing because they don't work well enough. And I bet most won't get recycled but go straight to landfill.

Most of them ARE made in China so I don't buy them.

Hungary has restarted a light bulb industry, though. Our local store has them.

Was in Norway a couple of weeks ago, had to drive in the dark, barely any vehicles without LED lighting, wa-aa-ay fewer than GB certainly.

On the other related subject that exercises IKBA denizens, wa-aa-ay more EV in Norway because, despite being a sparsely-populated country, they've got EV charging much better-organised. Mind, when GB and Norway got their oil booms (about the same time) and Maggie Thatcher said GB shouldn't bother with a sovereign wealth fund, Norway did. Now GB's boracic and Norway's flogging the oil it doesn't use ...
