Ultrasonic Cleaner; Hints and Tips

I've posted on another site, but I work on the "Plunder all knowledge bases" principle. I believe SteveB has experience of these so hopefully he wont just lurk on this one

I recently bought a 6 litre Ultrasonic Cleaner and a pack of UltroCarb powder cleaning medium. This should be diluted at 20g per litre. I was not too accurate on my measuring and probably went on the less is more method. Anyway I set the machine at 50* temp and ran 3 x 5min cycles. I was underwhelmed with the results, although I believe it to be operator error. I should say the pistons and valves were heavy with years of burnt on carbon deposits.
So, can anyone with experience of these cleaners give out any advice/hints/tips on getting the best results

IKBA but not sure that an ultrasonic cleaner will remove burnt on carbon deposits.

Think they are more suited to removing gum / grease from engine cases / carburettors.

On all my Triumphs I always used to use very fine emery to remove carbon, and then polish with Solvol or similar.

Who needs a signature anyway......

I only tried them as I couldn't find the small carb I was going to do. I had read the Kemet guide and they said

"In some instances burnt on carbon ie. cylinder heads, injection moulding/plastic extrusion dies with burnt on residue can very effectively be cleaned with ultrasonic action and the correct combination of detergent."

This was obviously not one of those instances or I didn't use the correct combination of detergent

Not to worry, I will find some other piece of kit to try out

If you dont try you dont know.

When I re comissioned the H2 I borrowed an ultrasonic cleaner from a work colleague to do the carbs in, I cant recal what liquid I used in it, it may have just been a very rich mix of Fairy Liquid and Water.

As you say with the right mix it will do the job.

So what is the other piece of kit going to be ?

Not sure Andy.
I've got a couple of tubs marked T160 scrap

that was replaced when I got Grin to do the top end rebuild, so probably a pile of bolts and studs. Trial and error with unused stuff until I get a handle on it.
Another site, a poster told how they clean their vinyl LPs, so may even try that. I've been digging out my old LPs lately

Cleaing vinyl LPs - would that be with WD40 by any chance ?

Jimmy, the best way to clean vinyl is a soft cloth and lighter fuel.

With or without final application of a match? I suppose it depends on your taste in music

I have another arm on my deck that has a brush and roller with material on it that picks up the muck and cleans the grooves....

We used wood or plastic scrapers, finishing off with a kitchen scouring pad or steel wool and kerosene (which is now classed as carcinogenic).
