That's only a pound and 5 shillings a week, surely wages were a bit better than that for a young working man?

Starting wages were about $1.25 an hour here in 1960....$50 a week, or £10 your money at the time.... Buy that Bantam in two months or so, except you carried your pay envelope to Mum...!

1960 I was 6 months into my apprenticeship earning £3.3.7 a weeks.

Hmm. I seem to remember getting about £5 a week as an agricultural labourer in 1965.

My wage as an apprentice mechanic at a R/R and Jag main dealer in 1960 was £3 10s. 0d a week and that included Saturday morning overtime. I had to give my Mum two quid out of that. Left me enough to run my Bantam and go on the pull at the Thursday 'Record Nite' (sic), 10 Weights and a pint of Tankard at the Regent Ballroom in Brighton with its sprung floor, DJ and Syd Dean's Orchestra.

The term "Half a dollar" has nothing at all to do with the currency of the USA. The term derives from when the British Crown coin replaced the English Crown and the Scottish coin of the same value and was actually called a Scottish Dollar. HTH.

Exchange rate of $5 to the pound ? Nreally? I thought that the best it had ver been at that time was £1 = $2.50.

You're right - I've been living in my old history books.

From Napoleonic times until about 1950, when most of the world was on a sort of Gold Standard, the inviolable rule was:

Five francs to the dollar
Five dollars to the pound. But that all changed in the early 1950s, and by 1960 it was as you say; about half that rate ....

Well I was getting £7. 10s a week in 1957 an that was paid monthly into my bank account ..nobody in my family had a bank account in them far off days..

My renumeration working for the Post Office in 1959, which at that time was part of the Civil Service, was about £4.10.0. a week.

When I started my engineering apprenticeship in 1956 I was on 17/6d a week for the first 3 months, then it went up to £1 on my birthday. Didn't reach the dizzy heights of £10 a week until I finished the apprenticeship in 1960. At which point I was immediately called up for National Service. Pay went down again!!

Ok,ok I give in I was wrong lets call it 6 months wages although I was allowing for the housekeeping you had to give your mum plus going down the Palais on Saturday night for a beer and pull a bird so not much left to save for your first motor bike

That was always my problem. Even a young buck with motorcycles on his brain DID have a few other priorities.... And they always cost money!

Dead right Jerry I was the only income for Mum then apart from her war widows pension which wasn't much and she had a mortgage ..Brother and Sister had fled the nest..

Although I must say that some of the girls I dated were trying to show that they wouldn't cost much money ... they'd leave half their food on their plate, or the pizza uneaten.

What I really didn't like was if I splurged on a dinner of a nice steak, baked potato, and salad, they'd eat the salad and half the potato, take a bite of the steak, and leave the rest.

Not my Fay, though. "Is that last piece of pizza mine?". Or "Thanks, the steak was cooked just right. What's for dessert?"

That, and the fact that she enjoyed going out on the bike, let me know she was a keeper.

In the end, they're the most economical kind!!

My first wage as an apprentice shipwright, in August 1980 was £29.50. I kept my first wage, then gave my mum £10pw rising proportionately as my wages did.
