What a complete waste of paper and time.

Just taxed my 1977 Honda CB750. What's the point when it doesn't need a MOT and its free? I suppose it keeps another few civil servants in a job.

There is no need for paper. The reason to go through the taxation process, even at nil cost, is to firstly legalise the right for the vehicle to be used on the rodd, and secondly to maintain a record of vehicle owners and all vehicles.

Other opinions may be available but this one is always correct.

The paper is generated by the DVLA Mike as a reminder, they don't need to as it's the owner's responsibility to tax, or SORN, the vehicle, but they do.

With no tax disc issued these days, without a reminder owners loose track of when the tax expires. The reminders are sent out to all vehicles, and even the Historic tax free ones need to be insured so the reminder also brings this to the owners attention. As MM says the DVLA need to maintain records. Having said that the SORN system is a bit of a farce now that it does not have to be renewed, many vehicles that are scrapped are still showing as SORN if not scrapped via a licenced breaker.

It's up to the registered keeper of the vehicle to notify change of keeper. If he doesn't and anything happens involving that vehicle then he/she is liable. Leaving it on SORN when you haven't got it is an act of stupidity. Passing to someone else for scrapping, whether licensed or not, and not notifying it just compounds that act.

Bear in mind when you tax any vehicle, even if the tax itself is free, the DVLA computer checks the vehicle's insured for use on the road.
