Boiled eggs - O/T

As I was getting my breakfast ready this morning - a soft boiled and compulsory toast soldiers, it crosssed my mind just how many seperate activities are needed to produce such a simple breakfast:

1. Get egg from cupoard
2. Get saucepan from cupboard
3. Get knife to cut top off egg and spoon from kitched drawer
4. Put water in saucepan
5. Turn on cooker / light gas
6. Put pan onto boil
7. Once boiling set timer and put egg in
8. Get bread from bread bin
9. Put into toatser after getting it from kitchen cupboard
10. Get butter from fridge
11. Butter toast
12. Cut into soldiers
13. Get egg cup from cupboard
14. Take egg out of saucepan when timer goes off
15. Get plate from cupboard
16. Assemble egg cup and soldiers onto plate
17. Go get salt and pepper (boiled egg is not right without salt / ppepper)
18. Remove top of egg
19. Eat
20. Wash up plate, egg cup, knife, saucepan
21. Put butter back into fridge
22. Put toaster away

Just makes you realise that to carry out such a simple operation there are a whole load of things that have to be done.

Perhaps I need one of those time and motion blokes (anyone remember them) to look at the process and see if ti can be improved upon.

There is always option B - get the Mrs to do it

Anyone care to list out the operations involved in a simple task like chaging the oil in their bike - and I dont mean take to dealer then collect from dealer.

Ah well it is Sunday morning and I am at a loose end.........

Thats not Daft Andy I have trouble getting my breakfast in the mornings I have to lay everything out so two Mugs ( two different) one teaspoon ...
Two breakfast bowls mine and Mazs ( both different)..spoons ..
Preparation..
Teabags in Mug (mine is Decaff) ordinary I'm Mazs.
Pour my Cornflakes and put sugar and milk on ..put water in kettle and boil whilst having a glass of water to take my three morning pills..then eat my breakfast pour the water into the mugs to make the tea.. Then can't remember which one had I put the decaff in ...they both look the same ..hope its right take Maz her tea then sit down and catch up with the news..Or I can get up later and let Maz do it..

Yep, life can be a pig but I can save you these two:

10. Get butter from fridge
21. Put butter back into fridge

I can't stand trying to spread hard butter so I keep enough for a couple of days at ambient temp in a pot on the worktop,

...and my spare oil in the airing cupboard.

Funny as it is, this was similar to a teaching tool that was used when the National Decision Making Model (NDM) was introduced in Policing, trying to standardise Command thought processes. The Instructor used a similar analogy. Making a cup of tea;
Info and Intel. Do I have tea, do I have access to water, do I have a container to store/heat the water, etc etc.
Assess Risk; Risk of Burns, E/Shocks, no milk, no sugar, etc
And so on through each stage.

Once you got this in your head, nothing was ever the same....Similarly your "I'll have a boiled egg for breakfast" Unbeknown to you (probably) you were running yourself through the NDM

Damn it Jimmy - forgot to do a risk assessment for the boiled egg. Knew I forgot something.

Mind you there are risks - boiling water, burning gas, possibly of salmonella from the egg, cuts from a sharp knife.

Health and safety would put a stop to it :-)

What about the risk of the ceiling falling in on you.Or a power cut. Or why bother to get out of bed to many risks in life.

An easy way to `poach` an egg is to fill a glass with water to about 1 inch/30ml from the brim, break the egg into the glass and place it in the microwave oven for about 1 minute, maybe more depending on the oven's Wattage (mine is 700 W). Pour the water out and catch the egg in a slotted ladle.
NB, keep an eye on it the first time in case it boils over; adjust the time or water level to suit.
