Retirement costs totally O/T

Hi folks,

Can I ask you retired persons how you estimated your living expenses once you stopped working? And did the reality turn out as you anticipated?

I know our current expenses but I suspect we will spend more when sat at home than when sat at work. I wondered if anyone has a general rule - 25% more or whatever. You can guess why I'm asking

Can't really help retired twenty years ago also the wife no pensions don't have a mortgage so OK there only both on state pensions but manage Maz does the money side we don't owe anything and even have savings we don't go to the pub or eat out and we don't go without Maz was in banking so she's in charge... can't stand these people on TV who say they can't manage on the wage they earn

Simon I retired 17 years ago at 60. So for the first five years I lived on my current and a savings account by transferring my gross monthly salary into a spare current account and lived off that.

in the first six months of that five year period i consolidated my various pension pots into a single investment account comprising ISA's and a portfolio of shares. At 65 I took my state pension and reduced my personal contributions so that my monthl;y income remained static.I also took advantage of George Osborne's change in pension rules and took the maximum amount from my pension pot, as it was tax free.

Over all those years I have taken some lump sums to pay for cars, house deposit, and other "essential" large payments. Currently, that is at 6:00pm today, my pesion fund despite all the withdrawals is significantly greater than its starting value, and that is entirely due to my financial advisers.

My wife has her state pension plus an employers final salary pension and still works part time for 14 hours a week...she works because she wants to and not from necessity.

So where does that leave me/us? Pretty happy in every respect. Our standard of living has not diminished in any way, we go on more holidays than when I worked, we buy a new car every couple of years (I do not mean a new second hand one), I can buy another motorbike if it suits me, ans we have no intention of downsizing, In summary life is good as I do not have to work any longer.

However you need to plan this early, and make sure you know exactly how much you are worth, oh yes and get a very good financial adviser, and I mean a VERY good one.

Simon I don't know if this helps on confuses you but get on top of it and enjoy life.

Didn't really estimate expenses as estimated income and fit expenses in that. However the pension investments are doing well and after 4 yrs retirement including new patio, bike, and metal knee, the funds are down less than 2%.

Off to the Comoros islands on holiday next week to try knock down the future inheritance tax liability

I have been retired for twenty-seven years, and my pension investments have now run out, but our generous, caring Government pays enough money into my bank account for me not to notice any difference in my ability to spend without worrying about money.

I retired three years ago Simon. I too found it quite difficult to estimate expenses. I'm sure you'll have thought of these all ready but here are some things to consider.

When you retire, you no longer have the travel expenses of getting to work, or buying lunch at work. In my case this alone accounted for about £60 - £70 per week. When you're retired you'll have more time to go to multiple shops to get good deals, rather than just doing a supermarket dash as quickly as possible and, of course, more time for decorating and DIY rather than paying somebody else to do it. Sadly, in my case, this last part of the plan has come unstuck because of my bad back

In my own case, I was only working part time before I retired, so simply subtracted work expenses from what I had been earning and paid myself that, so effectively the same amount. It's worked out fine, though due to the slump in the markets, I haven't been able to give myself a pay rise, I'm still getting by just fine. My situation may be different from yours though as my wife is still working.

You don't have to be crazy to post here, but it helps....

Sound financial advice above, but it's not all about money Simon. Consider the current state of health of both of you, possibly your family history health wise. No one currently healthy can predict what the future will bring and nobody knows what is just around the corner ( ask Bryan and Will) so if you feel now is the time to leave then grasp it, it's no use putting money in the bank if you keep putting off spending it. I retired in 2005, my wife a couple of years later. We had a lovely big caravan that we toured with and holidays abroad as and when we wanted them. Went out and about at our will, and then my wife was diagnosed with onset Dementia and our lifestyle changed dramatically. For 11 years now she has been virtually bed bound and seldom gets out and about. I'm not seeking a sympathy vote here just pointing out that changes happen in the blink of an eye so yes consider your finance but just consider as well what you want to do in retirement and if you consider now is the time it's right for you - do it.

Agree 100% Den. Prostate Cancer was the reason I retired early at 58. Other than that I may well have plodded on into my 60's, but it made me realize that time is worth more to me than money.

Approaching retirement and intending to remain in my 1889 built house (for 43 years now) I decided to deal with upcoming (and at the time uncosted) capital expenses and reduce future maintenance: New roof (previously slate and no felt), upvc d/glazed windows and doors plus upvc guttering, soffits and fascias, and a modern heating boiler.
Weekly costs have reduced from when working (no travel expenses or lunches out) but heating costs are greater as I spend more time at home.
I've never wanted to go on packaged, organised or hotel holidays (spent far too much time in hotels in 20 years of working throughout Europe) but a couple of years after retiring I bought a motorhome and still exploit the opportunity to have spontaneous long and short periods of travel, always abroad where motorhomes are welcomed as I live just a 30 minute drive from France - (well, a 30 minute drive from the Newhaven ferry port - same thing).
I do have private pensions (I lost an £80k fund when Equitable Life went tyres-up)and the Gov't pension, plus cash ISAs now paying around 5% tax free interest which I draw monthly.
Since retiring I haven't needed to draw on my capital except for giving some lumps to my sons for house deposits and extensions, new cars, private surgery......etc. (More satisfying to see them benefiting now instead of losing it through Inheritance Tax).
I live quite frugally and there's nothing I need or hanker after and each month I always seem to have a few hundred left over after my monthly expenditure of around £1800.

Retired about 35 years ago, only big fixed expenses food and energy, income from financial investments shares and fixed interest, no debt of course, I have found since retirement one has far more control over one’s choice of lifestyle, and cost of living.

Ime, this absolutely and above all. My parents owned their own business, worked for years when they both had long-term health problems; although they could've retired because of those problems, said they couldn't afford to retire.

However, they eventually did decide to retire when my paternal grand-mother developed Alzheimers and they didn't want to put her in a home. My parents sold their business for enough to buy a modern (= cheap to run) bungalow for all three of them and add to their savings to invest for a regular income. Sadly, the old dear only lasted another six months but, six months after that, my parents were saying they wished they'd retired years before ...

Sadly2, their long-term health problems were too far-gone for retirement to improve them much, my mother passed after only sixteen years retired but several of those restricted to a wheelchair. My father lasted another eight years but, without my mother to encourage him out, became increasingly reclusive, developed mental health problems.

Afaict, if you think like that, you'll believe you have to carry on working 'til you croak. Otoh, several years before I could retire officially, by chance, I had the opportunity to change jobs and work part-time, that also reduced my travelling expenses; I wasn't and am not on the financial bones of my arse, the time to do things for me, the OH and the kids fa-aa-ar outweighs any reduction in income; I still do holiday cover for my last employer because I want to, not because I have to.

I've since found out that several companies offer similar hours reduction to their employees in their current jobs. IIrc, you're a teacher? If yes, why don't you try working part-time for a year; see how you feel, how you manage financially?

Simon it depends what you want to do when you retire. Some people are just happy to sit on their bums all day and watch tv. I still want to ride my bikes on the road and also still use the race tracks with my race bikes while I still can so I have a expensive hobby hence I still do bike delivery work to help pay for it. So I guess we are all different although I can imagine that most on this site would still need their bikes to play with.It's like a drug but worth it

As has been said before sometimes tings don't work out that easy Jerry I wanted to make it well into Eighty years riding but things healwise put a block on that for both Maz and I but don't grumble we have had a good innings the thing that does piss me off is close friends popping off just had the message of one today thats four this year I'm hoping to make ninety but fat chance

Since I'm retired in the USA, some things will be different but some are universal.

1) My wife and I grew up without much money, and so we never learned how to spend it like I see so many people do. We're from the "Use it up, Wear it out, Make it do" old school - two new cars in 40 years, built our own house to avoid all contractor and some builder costs, etc. If you can enjoy life without spending a lot to pay other people for things and services, you're MILES ahead of the retirement game.

2) Everyone I talked to in the 10 years before I retired said the same thing ... "You can retire before you think you can. Don't wait to save up 'enough' money". I have found that to be very true.

Our household budget has been about the same proportions, in terms of expenses, ever since we were married 48 years ago. The only adder has been the £190/month for phone and internet services. My homeowner's insurance is £1800 a year, WAY more than the norm Over There. My annual personal property and real estate taxes are £3000 a year, my electric (we don't have gas) is £200 a month, and vehicle insurance is £1500 a year.

My income comes 1/3 from my company pension, 1/3 from Social Security (government pension starting age 62, and about 1/3 from an annuity from my investments, so it's spread out a little in case one of those fails. (People are always saying that the Social Security funding might fail, but I notice that neither Government Welfare doles nor Aid for Foreign Wars is in any danger of running out of money).

Retired 9 years now, and no surprises yet. Health is still good ... Last year I had all the diagnostics leading up to open heart surgery and a 5-way bypass, £150,000 on paper, but it cost me £0.00, thanks to the 2% of my paychecks I paid into Medicare for 40 years ... !

If I were you, I'd go ahead. YOU CAN'T BUY TIME BACK!

I've never heard a retiree say they wish they had kept working for longer.

I've had little free time since retiring 18 years ago, partly due to my kids who seem to think I need things to do to fill in my days, bless 'em.

Sprid I would still be working now if I hadn't been made redundant after the asset stripping company took us over.I loved my job and all the stress that went with it. Still miss it now.

I had a couple of jobs that I really enjoyed but were ruined by the shiny-arsed buffoons in 'Mahogany Row' who caused chaos and left or were promoted, leaving behind a mess for me to sort out.
On one memorable occasion at a sales meeting at my blue chip international group the V.P. asked the financial director what sales figure he would be reporting back to the American parent company to which he replied: "No problem. What figure do you have in mind?"
If the sales weren't good enough we'd send a couple of containers of (un-ordered)export product to the docks and produce invoices which weren't sent to the customers. After month end they'd be brought back into stock and be credited (usually around £100k to £150k), so at the start of the new month our sales were already behind by the amount of the returned and credited stock.
Our auditors knew what was going on but turned a blind eye as they didn't want to lose their contract.
All just short-term BS.

Many thanks to all of you for your sage advice - something this board excels at in between our amusing political spats and motorcycle stories.

I've been planning for a long time, ever since a friend who is a financial adviser took a quick look and said, 'You can retire very soon.'

Like many of you, my wife's health is a worry. I seem fine and am fit and healthy at present with a dad who lived to 96. So fingers crossed.

I still teach but have been 4 days a week for about 8 yrs now due to an escape after having a target placed on my back by my previous employers who could be described as stewards of licensed premises. Going part time after their attempts to destroy all over-50s in their workforce revealed a hidden joy. That extra day of freedom is wonderful.

I also opted out of the Teachers' Pension scheme to maximise my benefits from when I had been a middle management type teacher. That worked well for me as after 5 yrs you lose significant benefits. My pension will be taken at 60 after 4yrs and 9 months. Very pleasing, both on saved pension payments for five years and timing.

I was also fortunate to once renovate and rent out houses. I stopped that, sold up and banked the proceeds in fixed rate bonds, premium bonds and ISAs. I will never invest in shares as I hate risk and notice that my small additional pension, run by professionals for 1%pa of the value, never outperforms my own amateur investment in the above products. Too many people I know have been burned by shares.

The upshot of all this is... I shall reduce to two days/week next February and stop completely next July. My wife can stop too if she wishes. My lengthy chats with a few pension advisers, whilst side-stepping their kind offers (3% to invest with us!!) have educated me in calculating a conservative forecast. I shall enjoy comparing my spreadsheet with reality over the coming years. We are lucky in that we can now afford a more expensive and detached house, once the boys are definitely sorted in their futures, and not work again unless we want to.

I had never thought I would end up in this position but a reasonably frugal life, hard work and good DIY skills have paid dividends. My only expensive hobby was bikes, and as you all know I've lost the love although Mike's Commando... crikey, I wanted one for over 20yrs! Running, swimming, walking, cycling and reading are cheap as chips. Holidays not so cheap but we love cottages so hardly a world tour.

So, I've decided, calculated, smiled extremely happily and been very appreciative of all your opinions. Thanks chaps - I have carefully considered all that has been said on here and am finally convinced that I really can pack in the day job at 59 without any loss of life quality. I believe there are around 120 or so working days to go!

i'm 68 at Christmas,and a lorry driver still working but just 3 day's a week.i think this profession is more than just a job,and a few hgv driver's i know still carry on,or come back into it after trying retirement.1 guy packed it in,then came back not long after..still doing 4 day's a week on artic's at 72! i know Beezabryan was an hgv driver..it seems like a job that get's in your blood!

It's fantastic when you actually enjoy your work. I would think that there would be a lot of of New Age frustrations in that business these days.

Our correspondent in Kent drives a wagon-and-drag to France every day for Big Brown, and he hates it worse than wolf poison, has for 25 years. 690 days to go, although who's counting?

Same problem here, Al. I absolutely love my current post - kids are great, management lovely and the job makes you feel really great almost every day.

But, it's time to think of a change, and best whilst I still love it. There are a lot of poems, plays and books I know by heart after all these years. Now I want to study new things- for my own interest - and walk, run, ride, swim whenever I want.

My only concern is that I will miss it - I'm sure I'd be welcome to do supply teaching and that my social life is mainly in the office. I am averse to organised social events. I'd rather read my book but I recognise that that will have to change.

When I retired from a job I enjoyed, I considered registering with a temp agency, as lots of companies prefer to hire contractors when workload peaks.

But after one month of complete freedom, the idea of working again was so far in my rearview mirrors that I've never considered it since...

Yes, Lannis, I'm sure I will be exactly the same as you. The idea seems nice until I imagine getting up for work when I don't need to! In fact, I'm finding it hard to put up with the next 101 days
