Night time at the Ace in the 60's

I can remember some scary night time burn ups along the North Circular road. Not good trying to reach the ton in the dark with 6 volt lighting. Happy Daze.

In the 60s, a lot of bikes would gather in Exmouth Wimpey bar in the Evenings for a race around Country lanes. Many accidents but usually just broken bones.
The cars were not so lucky with quite a few fatal accidents. Great time for amateur racing on the roads as you knew if a car was coming towards you in the dark. Not many vehicles out after 6 pm back then.

I reckon the RAC van is waiting for the AA to arrive and get him going again.

Other opinions may be available but this one is always correct.

Is it true the RAC & AA used to race each other to see who could reach a breakdown before Beethoven's 8th symphony ended?

Bet if you took a picture from the same spot and at the same night and time today, it would be awash with light.

Talking about light pollution here, if I drive a few miles away from where I live, the sky is so much darker at night.

Who needs a signature anyway......

In the 60's it was quite a thing after the pubs closed on a Saturday night for groups of bikers (and later when we had BMC Minis) to race 25 miles up the A23 from Brighton Palace Pier to the Blue Pencil Motel near Gatwick for coffee where many air hostesses stayed over.
The police only had Morris Minors.

When we began racing about in Mini Coopers and Sprites at night, we fitted quadoptics headlights. You could see a lot further but adding a pair of lucas sealed beam driving lights made a great difference. Of course, using the old dynamo, you could not run them all too long
