Oil leaks

I dont like oil leaks - the KH has a couple of minor ones, one around the oil pump, which I have never been able to stop as I dont wat to overtighten any of the pump unions so I just live with it.

The other one is from the gearbox sprocket oil seal, it leaks because the sleeve that the seal fits over has some pitting on it from rust.

The sleeve is rusted in place and the only way to remove the sleeve and replace it is to strip the motor which I am going to do over the winter.

When I park it on the bike lift after a while there is what looks like a lot of oil on the surface of the lift.

I stuck a small container under the bike just to see how much it is leaking, after a week it amounts to a couple of spots, so I guess it just spreads out on the surface of the table.

In just over 1500 miles I have had to put about 100ml in the box to top it up.

So the leak is nothing like as bad as I thought, but still going to strip the motor over the winter as there is a whine from the box - should have looked at the bearings when I had it all apart - stupid me !

Might see about a bit of port work over the winter as well, had a word with Mick Abbey and for a modest cost it can be improved without making it too peaky.

That's the downside of old bikes, the fettling never ends

Sell it! Who wants to spend the winter in a cold garage getting endlessly annoyed with endless things that don't quite work out?

Much more satisfying to buy someone else's problem bike and spend a week or two working out simple (hopefully) thing it might be!

Nah - it is too much fun to sell and for someone else to reap the benefits of my previous hard work.

Not much effort to split a Triple case - no camshafts or valve gear to worry about.

Hardest part is getting the engine in and out of the frame.

Who needs a signature anyway......

Retire Andy, you can take the engine out every two weeks then and get an armchair in the garage with a flat screen tv

Monday, i get up and breakfast then get some bikes out of the garage to clear space and get the Triumph onto the lift. Then arrange an MOT for another and do a little work on the bike before a play in the garden. Great not selling my remaining hours to a boss. I get to use my hours myself.
