Question for the day.

My son`s 2001 Mazda 626 engine (the same model as mine) shudders when idling. He has spent hundreds trying to fix it to no avail: new engine mounts, spark plugs, new radiator, new belts. Different garages and it seems to be getting worse.

It looks like a case of "They all do that sir"

Maybe an air leak on the air inlet manifold. Have a look for a small crack or the gasket.

My old 1.6 Injected VW Golf was playing up, and replacing the fuel filter did the trick.

Might be worth a try.

How old is it? Are there any sensors that are beginning to break down & cause rough running?

Stuck / defective idle control stepper motor in the throttle body, if it has one ?

General or main dealer workshops are not much good at diagnosing problems - at best they just throw parts at a problem according to the "flow chart" diagnostic manuals provided by the car makers. You could try to find the true fault finding specialist workshop in your area that the other dealers send their "problem" cars to for fixing. I know of one nearby who is exectionally tenacious in tracking down the actual causes of problems, not just throwing parts at the situation hoping to fix it that way. Doesn't charge an arm & a leg either.

According to an Ex VW Mechanic I know, he says they were told to run the diagnostic, and whatever sensor shows up as causing the problem, replace it - no matter how many sensors and whether they are faulty are not.

All the costs are passed onto the customer, which they have to pay to get their car back so the Garage never loses out.

Shocking really.

He has retired now and looks after our 2 Golfs, but any diagnostic work he does he does "properly", sometimes you can simply reset that fault and things are fine sometimes it really is a sensor.

Other halfs Golf went into "limp" mode a while back, he just cleared the fault and it has been fine ever since.

Sometimes sensors throw a fault when there is nothing wrong with them.

VW at Exeter also do that sort of repair Andy. Sent a Golf down the boys garage after replacing virtually everything. Customer kicked off at VW so they gave him a new module that controls all the sensors for free. It turns out you cannot take this unit out without removing either the windscreen or dashboard. VW Golf is still the most troubled car coming into the garage. They have many problems once about 15 years old but it could happen to any cars.

I tested that this afternoon. No fart alarm fitted in my car.

+1 if a great enough population concentration - e.g. when I lived in a more-expensive part of south-east England, there was a specialist company locally that could earn a nice living dealing only with fool injection problems. Some solutions were quite amazing, never appear in any vehicle maker's diagnostic "flow chart".

2001? 23 years old? Scrap it and buy a new car.

For reliability, buy a 1990s Mercedes or Volvo. Very few unexpected problems but to buy the most reliable car, buy a Honda Jazz about 2007 era

Coincidentally I had a slow puncture repaired yesterday at the local tyre place. Two miles after driving away a gong sounded and the TPMS fault light came on, followed by the EPC light and Traction Control light. The car began juddering then went into limp mode. When I checked the tyre pressures at the side of the road the repaired one was at 52 psi vs the others correctly set at 32 psi. I dropped the repaired one to 32 and it ran fine. I returned to the tyre place and a guy cancelled the fault lights.
